7/18/2019 (GM-Steve)

The battle lasts only four rounds. Darkthorn and Dyson but get hit more than once while Barthon scores a couple of key critical hits. Lorcan uses his Torrential Geyser effectively. When the battle is over, the group loots the ogres and trolls (total of 49 sp). Lorcan leads the freed prisoners, still shackled together, into the secret passage. Wiley finds a set of keys on one of the ogres and gets the prisoners freed from their shackles. Wiley also provides a pair of oil flasks to quickly burn the trolls to prevent them from regenerating. The group briefly discussed dragging the bodies through the secret passages but decided to burn them where they fell. The other ogres, trolls and giants would know that something happened anyway.

The group retreats to the cavern where the gnomes are preparing for freed prisoners. They do first aid and healing. Kailin, wearing a Healing Charm, Armband of Headling and the new Pendant of Masterful Healing, casts cure light wound spells on both Darkthorn and Dyson but they are not as effective as he had hoped. Lorcan suggests that the magical healing items are interfering with each other. Since the Armband of Healing and the Healing Charm seemed to work well together, he removes the Pendant of Masterful Healing and gives it to Darkthorn to use. His next cure light wound spell then works as expected, healing 16 points of damage. He takes a couple of minutes to pray for another one and uses it to heal Darkthorn, but only gets the benefit of the Healing Charm. The Armband of Healing doesn't help because it is his fourth healing spell of the day, even though he did not get the benefit of it for the first two due to the interference of the Pendant of Masterful Healing.

GM: The group will eventually learn that the benefit of the pendant is that cure spells use d10 instead of d8 but it is not compatible with either a Healing Charm or an Armband of Healing, which are suppressed by the pendant. Darkthorn will use the pendant. He made his attunement roll but must wait 2 days to fully attune.

The group returns to the wine room and Barthon looks through the peephole to see a couple of ogres examining the scene of the battle. A third ogre comes in to haul away the final body but, as he is doing so, he sniffs the air and moves towards the peephole. Barthon quickly backs away. The group checks all the other peepholes on both levels but hears no discussion on the recent battle. Wiley learns that he can spend a spell point to Comprehend Languages (for 1 minute per overall level).

The group discusses their next move. They finally decide that they will try to get to the dungeon where the gnomes indicated that high value prisoners are held. The plan is to try to find prisoners who might be able to help them. If discovered, they will attack the guards of the slave pits. The gnomes give them a scroll of Wall of Stone and the group comes up with a plan to use it to keep the trolls in the troll warrens bottled up. The gnomes will assist by casting another Wall of Stone on the other entrance to the troll warrens. Lorcan would then use Solid Fog to try to black the exit leading up to the upper level.

With a plan in place, Darkthorn and Dyson sneak into the slave pits towards the dungeon. Darkthorn has Invisibility to Animals to hide himself from the snake while Dyson has his Ring of Invisibility. Dyson puts up a Mink Link with the gnome mage to let him know when to attack from the other side of the troll warrens to block them in.

The two reach the dungeon without being seen. Darkthorn opens the door to the dungeon and the two sneak in and close the door behind them. Dyson opens his hooded lantern to reveal a dungeon with five cells. Two are occupied. When Dyson looks into one of the occupied cells, he is a bit surprised when the occupant is able to see him through his Ring of Invisibility.

The first prisoner is an engineer and the second is a mercenary who is more than willing to help the group in exchange for freeing him. Darkthorn gives him a +1 Longsword that he got from Wiley.

GM: Even though Wiley is not there, Dennis did suggest that the Ring of Invisibility could use additional identification. This is not the first time that people seem to be able to see Dyson even though he is invisible.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

7/25/2019 (GM-Steve)

As Dyson and Darkthorn are leaving the dungeon with the two freed prisoners, they are spotted by a troll who raises the alarm. Immediately Darkthorn sprints for the door leading to the troll warrens while Dyson tells the gnome mage to wall off the door on the other side. Dyson sprints north to help the rest of the group. Per the plan, Barthon runs down the passage and towards the stairs leading to the upper level. His goal is to seek that no trolls go up and warn the rest of the fortress about the attack. He is attacked by a troll as he runs. Lorcan sprints past Dyson, who is fighting another troll, towards Darkthorn so that he can put up a Wall of Stone on the door that Darkthorn is guarding. He has to change plans abruptly as the massive snake comes out of the slave pits near him. He shouts for Wiley and then dodges into the slave pits. Wiley runs up and attacks the snake.

It takes a couple more rounds but Lorcan finally gets into position and puts up the Wall of Stone behind Darkthorn, blocking the other exit from the troll warrens just as more trolls were about to come out. Darkthorn and Ronco (a mercenary who was found in the dungeon) are battling a pair of trolls.

Then the door in the northeast corner opens and a giant comes out right in front of Kalin. The two begin battling but the giant switches to attack Dyson after Dyson kills his troll. One of the freed prisoners uses a torch to get the troll burning to free up Dyson to help Kalin.

Kalin uses his cleric pool to good effect adding defense and protection for himself, Wiley and Dyson (the others are out of range).

Dyson, Ronco and Darkthorn all kill their trolls. As freed prisoners with torches move into to burn the trolls, Darkthorn moves all the way up to help Dyson while Ronco moves up on the snake.

Lorcan meanwhile, put up a Solid Fog to block the stairs and then moved to assist Wiley with the snake, using a Torrential Geyser and a Bolt of Water, very badly wounding the snake.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night. The battle is still going on. Barthon is fighting the last of the trolls at the bottom of the stairs, which are now choked with Solid Fog. Dyson is fighting the giant and Darkthorn has just arrived to assist. Wiley is very badly wounded but still fighting the snake with help from Ronco. Lorcan is in position to help against either the snake or the giant with his spells. Kalin is also in position to help with his war cleric abilities.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

8/1/2019 (GM-Steve)

The battle against the giant, trolls and huge snake continues. Ronco kills the snake with his next attack. Wiley takes a round to drink his Potions of Healing, getting him out of the Very Badly Wounded territory. The giant continues to focus on Dyson even after Darkthorn arrives and eventually drops him. Dyson falls and is at -10 hit points. He uses a Luck Point to avoid losing additional hit points (at -10 HP, you normally lose 1 additional HP per round, staring on the following round).

Meanwhile, Barthon finally drops the final troll, just in time to have an ogre come through the Solid Fog. Barthon sends one of the freed slaves back to tell the rest of the group that an ogre came through but that he can handle him. The actual message that the man delivers is that ogres are coming through. Lorcan and Ronco take off to reinforce Barthon and, sure enough, by the time they arrive, another ogre has come through.

With Dyson down, the giant shifts to attack Darkthorn. Wiley attempts to assist with his bow but, when he fails to hit, he draws his sword and moves up. Kalin also moves up with the idea to drag Dyson out of the way and do some healing but, when the giant sees this, he switches his attacks to Kalin. Kalin has a Protection from Evil spell going and also puts up his Divine Aura. He has a very good defense against the giant though he still gets hit a couple of times. He uses the CLW in his Healing Charm to heal himself when he gets into Badly Wounded territory.

Eventually the three defeat the giant and he falls. While Kalin and Wiley see to Dyson and also help the freed slaves to escape, Darkthorn runs over to assist Barthon, Lorcan and Ronco. Barthon is still up but barely so (he is at 2 HP). By the time Darkthorn joins the battle, the three ogres are defeated though both Ronco and Lorcan are Badly Wounded and Barthon is Very Badly Wounded.

Barthon uses a Healing Potion on himself and then he and Ronco begin to assist in freeing the slaves while Wiley and Darkthorn guard the stairs. This speeds things up considerably as both Barthon and Ronco are able to get to the top of the slave pits without the need for the ladder. They identify the pits that are empty and open the trap doors of the ones that are not.

Another ogre comes through the Solid Fog and Darkthorn and Wiley attack it and eventually kill it.

Within a few minutes, all of the remaining slave pits are empty of people. Kalin and Graylock (the freed engineer) guide the prisoners into the secret tunnels and towards the cavern with the river running through it.

Lorcan puts up another Solid Fog at the bottom of the stair and then the group follows the escaped slaves.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

8/8/2019 (GM-Steve)

Once back in the relative safety of the large cavern, the group discusses their next steps and decides to watch at a couple of the secret doors. About 30 minutes after the attack, they see a large group of ogres and trolls investigate some of the rooms. One of the ogres seems to notice the secret door in one of the rooms but doesn't know how to open it. He tries battering it open but it holds. The ogres and trolls depart but come back shortly thereafter with a hill giant, hill giantess and a ogre chieftain. All three examine the door and attempt to open it but fail. The the hill giantess begins to cast. Dyson, who was watching through the peep hole, backs off to where he can watch the door but not see through the peephole. Lorcan, who had been backing him up, had already departed to warn Darkthorn and Wiley that the door might be breached.

When Lorcan, Darkthorn and Wiley return, Dyson is still watching. Nothing happened to the door. Darkthorn approaches and peers through. He sees the giants in conversation and then, shortly thereafter, they all depart. He sees occasional lights and ogres in the passage beyond the room thereafter. The group concludes that the giantess failed to cast whatever spell she was attempting, perhaps multiple times.

The group returns to the cavern and uses the rest of their healing, including two Repair Injury spells from Kalin. The gnomes have brought some food over - enough for a couple of meals. Kalin casts a Create Food and Water to supplement it. The rescued prisoners set up camp in the south end of the chamber far from the entrance while the group sets up camp near the entrance. Those in the group with sleeping bags and blankets donate them to the prisoners, especially for the babies and children.

GM: Note that the last sentence above was not discussed but I am assuming it to be true.

In the morning, the group does more healing so that, while everyone is still wounded, no one is badly wounded or even bloodied. They decide to head back to the upper level via the secret passages to see what is going on. However, as they head down the secret passage in the lower level, they run smack into a group of trolls and battle is joined. Dyson and Darkthorn are able to gang up on the first one but, when it drops, Darkthorn moves up so that Lorcan and Dyson can drag the body back and burn it to prevent it from regenerating. Even so, the troll starts to stir as Dyson is dragging it back but he smashes its head. Then Lorcan is burning it with a torch.

At about the same time, Kalin hears a distant rumbling sound coming from back towards the cavern. He mentions this and Barthon and Ronco run back to check it out. Barthon checks the secret door while Ronco steps into the cavern. He is in time to see an ogre coming out of a hole in the wall that was not there before. Clearly someone - probably the hill giantess - used a Tunneling spell to break through to the cavern. Barthon has the idea to set up a counterattack in the tunnels where they would only have to fight the ogres one at a time but Ronco quickly points out that the ogres may ignore them and go for the rescued prisoners. This is borne out as the ogres see Barthon and Ronco retreating so turn right towards the prisoners. Barthon and Ronco charge forward. Ronco charges directly towards the ogres while Barthon circles around to block the new tunnel. This works for a round until the ogre behind the one Barthon is fighting shoves him forward towards Barthon. Barthon steps back and soon a total of 7 ogres have entered the cavern. Ronco is fighting two, including the chief, Barthon is fighting three and Wiley, who followed the others a round later, is fighting one. The last one is heading towards the rescued prisoners but one of the gnome warriors is in the way. The gnome tells the group that another group of trolls and ogres are attacking the gnomes at the barricade.

GM: We are five rounds into the battle. Two trolls and one ogre are dead and no one in the group is badly wounded or bloodied. Ronco and Darkthorn are the worst off.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night. We will pick up at Round 6 next week. Kalin cast a Spiritual Hammer on round 2.

8/15/2019 (GM-Steve)

The battle continues. While Darkthorn fights the trolls at one end of their line, Kalin and Dyson run out the secret door with the intent of getting behind them to attack the other end of their line. The plan works very well. Kalin uses his Cleric pool to beef up defenses, to very good effect and also burns the trolls that Dyson drops.

Meanwhile, the other battle is not going as well. Barthon drops one of the three ogres fighting him but is badly wounded. Meanwhile one of the ogres heads towards the freed villagers. A gnome and two of the villagers armed with weapons provided by the gnomes intercept. However, one of the villagers suddenly transforms into an ogre and the gnome and remaining villager are killed. One of the ogres makes his way towards the other end of the cavern to attack the villagers while the new ogre moves up to attack Wiley. Wiley kills his other ogre opponent but then is badly wounded, and later very badly wounded by the new ogre. Meanwhile, Ronco has gone down and the ogre chief turns his attention to Barthon.

Barthon shouts for assistance. Lorcan hears him shout and heads in that direction letting Darkthorn know that he is no longer available to burn trolls but knowing that it will be at least a minute or two before any of them regenerate to consciousness. When he arrives, he uses his spells to good effect, casting Bolts of Water and hitting both the ogre chief and the new ogre with Torrential Geysers. After Darkthorn drops his remaining troll, he also joins the other battle.

The ogre chief finally goes down but so does Wiley. The ogre Wiley was fighting turned invisible and stepped back. Wiley burned a point to see him and stepped up. Wiley was already very badly wounded and when the invisible ogre hit him, he dropped. However, the Torrential Geyser continued to target the invisible ogre for a couple more rounds before it suddenly stopped, indicating that the ogre somehow eluded it, possibly by teleportation.

Dyson dropped his troll and then used his Boots of Speed to race towards the other battle, leaving Kalin to keep burning trolls. By the time Dyson arrives, the battle is about over. Darkthorn kills one of the remaining ogres while Dyson zips past to attack the ogre terrorizing the villagers.

Darkthorn, who had been Bloodied and close to Badly Wounded, finally gained the benefit of his Death Axe, killing three ogres and healing a total of 18 HP. (GM Note: this includes one ogre outside)

Lorcan points out that the group needs to move fast. The giants obviously know where they are now and there seems to be nothing to prevent them from marshalling more troops and attacking again. The group takes a few rounds to drink healing potions and cast a couple of spells but, at the same time, they tell the villagers that they need to move now. Healing brings both Wiley and Ronco back around.

GM: The group did take time to quickly loot the bodies of the dead ogres and gained a total of 152 sp worth of coins from the ogres and trolls.

With Ronco and Barthon bringing up the rear of the freed villagers, the group heads down the secret passages and up to the upper level. Lorcan opens the door to the courtyard with the intent to block as many of the dire wolves as possible while the group engages the rest, allowing the villagers to flee past. But the gates stand open and no dire wolves are visible. Unsure what to make of this, Lorcan waits while more villagers climb up to this level and then leads the way out into the courtyard, through the north gate and across the open field beyond towards the trees. He is running as are the rest of the group and the villagers. The plan is that if the group sees any giants, ogres or trolls, the group will engage them in combat while the villagers continue to run.

This very thing happens after the group and villagers begin to enter the trees. A group of two ogres and a dire wolf are visible about 30 feet away. The gap closes quickly. Darkthorn, Lorcan and Wiley stop to do battle with them while Kalin and Dyson continue leading the villagers deeper into the trees.

Meanwhile, at the back of the extended group, Barthon and Ronco are the last to reach the upper level and exit into the courtyard. Suddenly Barthon stops, telling the villagers to keep running. Ronco stops and looks at Barthon quizzically.

"There were more villagers used as slaves in the kitchens. Let's take a quick look."

Ronco agrees and follows Barthon down a secret passage and through a secret door across from the kitchen area. There they find almost a dozen villagers unguarded and milling aimlessly.

"FREEDOM AWAITS IF YOU FOLLOW US," Barthon tells them loud enough to catch their attention.

"Follow me," Ronco adds and leads the way back into the secret passages. Barthon remains to ensure all of them follow and then brings up the rear. Ronco leads the procession out into the courtyard and through the far gate. He can see the rest of the villagers ahead of him just entering the trees. He runs in that direction, followed by the kitchen slaves. Barthon brings up the rear.
