The group opened the door to reveal a mostly empty room. On the far side are a pair of massive doors with writing on them. In front of the doors are three dead bodies. Darkthorn moves closer and determines that the dead figures probably died of injuries sustained in battle. The writing on the door says, "Beyond these portals are locked all of the demons of Abyss.". The group searches the room but finds nothing else of interest. The doors radiate magic at level 3 on a scale of 1 to 3. The bodies have long been looted.

The group departs and continue exploring. They find a weapons training room devoid of serviceable weapons but that contains a secret door. It leads to a large room containing a 10 headed hydra. Darkthorn charges towards it and the rest of the group follows. The battle is difficult but the group triumphs. After the battle, the group uses the remainder of their healing spells.

The hydra was guarding the hallway leading to the former chambers of an Amazonian warrior. In the room, the group finds a couple of items of monetary treasure as well as a magical longsword (that no one recognizes) and magical hand axe that Lorcan believes is a +2 weapon. Dyson takes the hand axe for now while Wiley takes the sword.

The group is cautious now and wants to avoid combat but still explore. They find another entrance into the dungeon (from the forest outside) and signs that someone has used it within the past couple of weeks. Next they find a barracks room. It is similar to the other barracks rooms the group has found except that there is an elf sleeping in one of the bunks. He is wearing leather armor and holding a sword. He awakens as the group enters. He is confused as to why he is here and what happened to the rest of his group consisting of four more elves. During the conversation, the group sees the bed the elf was sleeping in briefly disappear and reappear except that the bed looks slightly different. They surmise that the bed disappeared after the elf, who introduces himself as Guillis, lay down in it and the rest of his group was unable to find him. They ask if he wants to tag along with them and Guillis agrees.

GM: Guillis is Jason's new character. He is an elven warrior.

GM: Jason recreated his character. He is now a sea elf Swashbuckler. His name is Barthon Brightwave.

The next spell trigger the group encounters causes Dyson and Wiley to be healed with a CLW spell.

The group finds a study with a secret door behind a bookcase and another barracks room, this one with the bed that they think that Guillis was originally sleeping on before it disappeared from the previous barracks.

The group opens the secret door and finds a dimly lit room containing a fountain. Perched on the far side of the fountain is a cat. As Lorcan and Dyson maneuver to get a better look, the cat breathes a ball of fire at Lorcan that explodes and encompasses Dyson as well.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

2/21/2019 - Didn't play. I was feeling very sick.

2/28/2019

The group moves in to attack the cat. Suddenly the cat disappears. Kailin hears a sound behind him and moves into the room from the passage. Wiley and Dyson move over to take on what is clearly an efreeti. However, they stand side by side at the entrance to the passage so the efreeti simply steps back and lobs fire at them. They scatter and then the efreeti moves up and attacks. Lorcan targets it with a Torrential Geyser. Barthon executes an acrobatic maneuver to get behind the efreeti. He succeeds but the torrential geyser blocks him from being able to attack. Kailin uses his Spiritual Weapon spell to attack as well.

Wiley gets very badly hurt and is forced to withdrawal. Everyone else closes around him and then the efreeti disappears again. Wily uses a spell point to enhance his Witchsight. He sees the efreeti a few seconds later. The efreeti lobs another ball of fire and then Dyson and Barthon close on him. Darkthorn also moves up. The group defeats the efreeti but three members of the group are badly or very badly wounded when it is done.

Kailin uses his Potion of Healing on Dyson who then does First Aid on everyone who was hit, to varying effect. The group uses the last of their healing bandages on Darkthorn.

While first aid is going on, Kalin finds a secret door in the corner of the room but does not see a way to open it. This is okay as the group plans to rest for at least a day if not two.

When all healing is exhausted, the group is still in a bad way. They rest for the night. In the morning, the group uses all of their healing spells to get everyone back to some semblance of health but decides to spend another night. Kalin asks Lorcan to see if he is attuning to the ring and Lorcan determines that he is not. The group does a version of rock-paper-scissors to see who will try the ring next and Darkthorn wins. He makes a successful attunement roll.

Lorcan uses a pearl to cast a Ritual of Identification and learns that the cloak the group found is a Cloak of Protection (+1). Lorcan has been wearing it and continues to wear it. Lorcan's ritual also determines that the sword that Wiley has been carrying (from the Amazon chambers) is especially effective against fire creatures. He had not been using it when fighting the efreeti.

Another night passes and by morning, everyone is healed enough to continue exploring. By this time, the group has determined that spraying water on the secret door triggers it to open slightly and reveal a handle. The group opens the door into a passage bathed with light and leads to a lush garden also bathed in what appears to be natural light. Lorcan determines that the entire area is covered by some sort of illusion-based magic - which could be providing the natural light or it could be something different. As the group is looking around, an extremely fast bolt of fire streaks from the far corner of the room and explodes near Darkthorn and Dyson, causing minor damage.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

3/7/2019

The group surges into the room in an effort to find the fireball-casting opponent. As they move forward towards the far corner of the room, more fireballs come their way though some of them are very weak. Dyson is the first to reach the far corner, thanks to his Boots of Speed and he sees a streak of movement, almost faster than he can follow, heading for another corner of the room. This game goes on for some time as the opponent moves fast, throws a fireball and then moves on. Dyson is able to catch up a couple of time and sees a large, chameleon-like creature that blends in very well to the flower garden, making it difficult to see more than a few feet away.

It is finally Darkthorn who notices that there seems to be a visual overlay upon the room and when he concentrates on seeing past it, he notices that the room is actually much smaller than it appears and is really empty. The garden is some sort of illusion that creates not just the garden but the illusion of a massive room. Once he realizes this, and interacts with the underlying room instead of the garden, he too appears to run at incredible speeds. He calls out his findings and soon everyone except Wiley are able to ignore the illusion. They corner the fire chameleon in a corner and attack it. Wiley is able to penetrate the illusion a short time later.

Then, between melee attacks from Darkthorn, Barthon and Dyson, and magical attacks from Lorcan and Wiley, they group kills the evil creature.

The group spends some time doing first aid and healing. Darkthorn helps Lorcan drag the carcass out of the room where Lorcan cuts it open and probes for consumed treasure, but finds none.

It takes over an hour to complete all of the first aid and healing and then the group investigates the other door in the room. It is not locked or trapped and Darkthorn opens it. He enters slowly with Lorcan behind checking for magic. The room is dark but the group illuminates it with a Lantern spell from Kalin.

Lorcan determines that every item of furniture in the ancient bedroom is magical and strongly resembles the triggers that the group has been finding throughout the dungeons. Dyson, Kalin and Wiley stay outside the room while Darkthorn, Barthon and Lorcan remain inside. Then Lorcan touches an item of furniture.

Immediate a whirling barrier of blades springs into being blocking the doorway. At the same time, six flaming spears appear in the room and begin circling the group. Not sure what to make of it, the three watch warily. Suddenly one of the spears breaks away and flies at Darkthorn, hitting and hurting him. Once it hits him, the spear falls to the ground dormant. In this manner, the spears target one person per round. If they miss, they continue to circle to attack another round. Most of the time they seem to target Darkthorn.

Kalin has the idea to have Wiley attempt to cast his Sorcery counterspell at a spear through the Blade Barrier. The first time he gets the spell off, it works and one of the spears falls to the ground dormant. Darkthorn gets hit again and then Wiley counters the remaining spears. The Blade Barrier is still up.

Darkthorn, Barthon and Lorcan begin searching the room while Dyson, Kalin and Wiley are stuck on the other side of the Blade Barrier. Most of the books in the bookcase have been spilled onto the floor and it looks like something was chewing on them but they manage to find a moderately intact spell book containing some General Spells. They also find six highly magical books.

Darkthorn uses his prybar to open the chest but it is full of clothes. Lorcan checks over the desk and finds a magical ring and dagger. He believes the ring is a +2 Ring of Protection and the dagger either +1 or +2.

The Blade Barrier is still up so Lorcan has the idea to spend time learning the Greater Circle of Protection, which was in the intact spell book and then using it to get past the Blade Barrier. Three hours pass as he learns the spell. He then steps near the Blade Barrier on this side and has Dyson do the same on the other side. He brings up the circle with both of them in it and the Blade Barrier unable to penetrate. Dyson steps into the room. He begins searching for hidden compartments in the chest, desk and other furniture. He finds a hidden compartment in the chest that contains a pouch of platinum coins. He does not find any other secret compartments or doors.

Lorcan uses the Greater Circle to get the group out of the room past the Blade Barrier. Kalin uses his last CLW on Darkthorn who took the brunt of the flaming spear damage.

The group heads back out into the dungeon and decides to check a couple more doors. They trigger a spell trap that renders Lorcan mute and then another that causes Fear spells to hit both Lorcan and Wiley. Lorcan makes his save but Wiley does not. Fortunately Barthon is able to grab him before he runs off screaming. Others quickly jump over to help until the Fear passes a couple of minutes later.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

3/14/2019

The group decides to rest for the night in the passage. A few minutes later, the muteness on Lorcan wears off. Lorcan begins a Ritual of Preparation prior to a Ritual of Identification. Two hours into the 10 hour ritual, the ceiling activates and sends some sort of sleep gas spell at the group. Kalin and Darkthorn are on watch at the time. Darkthorn succumbs to the gas while Kalin does not. Kalin attempts to awaken Darkthorn and then the others but they are in a deep sleep. He interrupts Lorcan's ritual and tells him what happened. Both attempt to awaken the sleepers. After about 10 minutes, they are able to awaken Dyson. After another 10 minutes, they are able to awaken the rest of the group. Lorcan has the idea that maybe spending a lot of time in one location triggers the ceiling magic traps so the group heads back to the room they rested in previously and tries again. This time they are able to sleep through the night.

In the morning, they head back to the five way intersection. Dyson sees a secret door on the far wall and Darkthorn opens it, revealing a secret passage. The group heads down the passage. It ends at the back of a secret door. Darkthorn opens it revealing a small room with a door on the far wall. Lorcan sees a plane of magic across the doorway that looks like a trigger. Darkthorn triggers it. He immediately disappears and the group hears the sound of a roaring crowd in the distance. They immediately assume that Darkthorn has appeared in the arena. Lorcan and Dyson step through together and appear in the stands of the arena. They see Darkthorn down in the battle pit fighting a massive purple worm. Lorcan uses his Spell Wand to send a Torrential Geyser at the worm but the spell fizzles and Lorcan disappears. Meanwhile, Dyson runs towards the stairs down to the battle pit. As soon as he steps off the stairs he too disappears.

One second later, Barthon, then Kalin and then Wiley appear. They do not see Lorcan or Dyson but see Darkthorn battling the purple worm. Barthon runs forward and leaps over the rail. As soon as he does so, he disappears. Both Kalin and Wiley see this and decide to stay in the seating area.

A couple of rounds later, Darkthorn defeats the purple worm. He looks both pleased and surprised. So do Kalin and Wiley watching from the stands. They expected the battle to be much more difficult with a high likelihood of Darkthorn losing. Darkthorn heads over to the steps and up into the stands.

As soon as he leaves the battle pit, a cell door on the battle pit floor slams open. Inside the cell are Barthon, Dyson and Lorcan. Barthon and Dyson immediately exit - or try to. Barthon succeeds in exiting and then the door slams shut, trapping Dyson and Lorcan inside. As Barthon enters the battle floor, a massive rhinoceros beetle appears and battle is joined. The battle is not easy but Barthon eventually prevails. Darkthorn cheers and Barthon climbs back into the stands.

The cell door opens again and this time Dyson exits. A large gargoyle appears and battle is joined yet again. Dyson has a tougher time of it (thanks to 3 critical hits where Dyson uses Luck points for 2 of them), but he eventually defeats the gargoyle.

Once Dyson leaves the battlefield, the cell door opens again and Lorcan comes out. His opponent is a hill giant. He attempts to use a Solid Fog spell from his wand but the spell is dispelled as soon as it is cast and Lorcan is forced to battle it with his sword. He defeats it with relative ease (thanks to a grievous and 2 critical hits).

Instead of departing the battle floor, Lorcan checks out the other two doors. Dyson and Darkthorn come down and assist but both lead to empty cells.

Darkthorn also reveals that he found a small pouch containing 8 platinum coins in his belt pouch. Barthon and Dyson also find such pouches but they contain 6 platinum each. Once Lorcan leaves the battle floor, he also finds a pouch that contains 5 platinum coins.

After some discussion, Kalin and Wiley decide not to attempt the arena and the group departs via the east entrance. They make their way back to the 5 way intersection and choose another door. It ultimate leads to a strange temple of some sort, dimly lit by death's head candles on an altar sitting upon a raised dias. Lying on the floor in front of the dias is a robed, skeletal figure.

The group enters. Lorcan detects a relatively high level of magic on the skeletal figure and low level magic on the death's head candles.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

3/21/2019

Ignoring the body on the floor, Darkthorn steps up on the dias and looks at the back of the altar. He sees what appears to be a secret compartment that is roughly three feet square, that looks like it is opened by moving one of the skeletal heads setting on a step on the back side of the altar. Lorcan confirms that no magic is present and then Dyson checks for traps, but finds none. Darkthorn opens the panel revealing a shaft descending into darkness. Metal rungs are set in the right wall and form a ladder leading down the shaft.

With Darkthorn in the lead, the group descends. The shaft ends after 10 feet and the group is in a passage leading south. It turns to the right, goes for a ways and then turns right again and ends at a door. Dyson steps up to check the door for traps but stops when he sees that the door itself does not seem to be very stable. Wiley and Kalin remove the wooden plank from the Bag of Holding and hand it up to Dyson. He uses it to probe the floor and walls around the door. The door suddenly falls down into the hall, right where Dyson would have been standing if he had moved up to check for traps.

Beyond the fallen door is a room. In the center of the room is a table with a chair behind it. The only other furnishings are a couple of dozen pictures hanging on the wall. Each is about a foot high by eight inches wide and all are set in similar frames. Each shows the image of a man or woman with a label underneath. The closest ones to the door are labelled "The Archer" and "The Athlete". Lorcan immediately recognizes the reference but is a bit confused as well. He knows of a magic item called the Deck of the Masters but it is a deck of cards where one can choose a card to reveal a master. The person will then disappear for 10 minutes though 3 months will pass for them. During this time, they will learn skills related to the master chosen. He is not sure how it will work with pictures that can be chosen with no apparent random element.

After some deliberation, Wiley steps up in front of The Magican with the intent to touch it. Before his hand reaches the picture however, he has disappeared. The Barthon does the same with The Athlete, followed by Darkthorn with The Archer, Dyson with The Merchant, Lorcan with The Scholar and finally Kailin with The Courtesan. When Wiley returns 10 minutes later dungeon time, but three months later by his own perspective, he finds the chamber empty. He as just spent the last three months with The Magician learning more about magic. A short time later, Barthon returns having just spent time learning and improving various athletic skills. There follows Darkthorn who learned archery and associated skills, Dyson who improved his merchant related skills, Lorcan who improved his scholarly skills and Kailin who picked up some courtesan skills.

Everyone is fully healed and everyone has all of their spells and spell points back. From the perspective of the dungeon, they have only been gone for about 10 to 15 minutes but from the perspective of their memories of the Dungeons of Duplicity, they have been gone for three months.

The group turns to the complex intersection and investigates another door. It leads to a barracks room that might be the one that was reflected in the tapestry at the entrance but having last seen it over 3 months ago, the group is not entirely sure. In any event, there is nothing of interest in the room so they move on. They have to deal with a couple of locked doors and a trapped door that fills the hall with poisoned darts. Wiley is barely missed but Lorcan is hit. Lorcan is skilled with Poison Lore but misidentifies the poison that infected him and mistakes it for a very deadly poison. Darkthorn uses his Slow Poison and then Kailin gives him a Potion of Neutralize Poison.

Dyson finds a plane of magic across the doorway and uses his skills an Helm of High Sorcery to remove the trap. He is successful but then a blue-skinned man, naked but for a bracer on is right wrist and a longsword in his left, charges forward. He attacks Dyson and tells him to leave. Dyson backs away slowly and the man says, "leave faster." Dyson turns and runs out the next door which Barthon closes once he is through.

Dyson was hit twice so Darkthorn does First Aid followed by a CLW from Kailin.

The next room is a larger barracks room but still with only three beds and three chests. Two of the beds have recently dead human bodies lying on them. Both appeared to have died in battle within the last few hours.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

3/28/2019

The group decides to check the door on the other side of the dungeon that Dyson was not able to open previously. They make their way through the spell triggers, setting them off as they go. Dyson is hit with a curse but does not know the nature of it. They are stopped by a Wall of Iron that Lorcan is able to counter. Lorcan is hit with deafness that he hopes is not permanent. Finally, they are stopped by a Blade Barrier near their destination. They try to wait it out but after 20 minutes, it is still up. They discuss trying the non-corporeal undead room and, as they are discussing it, the Blade Barrier disappears. They continue down to their original destination.

Dyson unlocks the door revealing a passage. There is a barracks part way up the passage but it has a plane of magic across the doorway so they do not enter.

Dyson unlocks the door at the far end of the passage revealing a large, dimly lit room carpeted in thick black. There are not furnishings that they can see. Lorcan sees a plane of magic on the floor that he conjectures might cover a pit trap.

As the group is studying the room, magic missiles hit Darkthorn and Lorcan and they see a black reptilian figure deep in the room. Three missiles hit Darkthorn and two hit Lorcan. Lorcan charges into the room avoiding multiple planes of magic on the floor that might cover pits. As he gets close to the creature, which the group now identifies as a spirit naga, Lorcan tumbles into a pit that was hidden in mundane fashion rather than with magic. He lands on his feet.

Barthon leaps the pit and attacks the naga. Dyson tries to go around but tumbles into another pit. Darkthorn tries to go around another way and also falls into a pit.

Wiley burns a point so he can see the magical traps and starts working his way around while Barthon continues to battle the creature. Darkthorn pulls the pickaxe out of his Brace of Combat, catches the pick on the edge of the pit and levers himself out. He and Wiley close on the naga and attack. Then the naga says, "DIE!" to Barthan who promptly falls to the ground. The naga flees into a nearby pit. Both Darkthorn and Wiley attack as it flees.

Meanwhile, Kalin is at the door and has cast a Spiritual Weapon to attack with. He attempts to follow the naga as it exits one pit and enters another. He manages to attack it once before it flees into another pit. Darkthorn, concerned about Barthon, attempts first aid and is pleased when Barthon comes to (he was attacked with a Command spell and would have come around regardless of Darkthorn's efforts but Darkthorn doesn't know that).

The group makes their way carefully to the final pit where the naga fled, indicated by Kalin's hovering morning star/spiritual weapon. The group is wary of more pit traps. They can easily see the magical ones but must check carefully for the mundane ones.

They reach the pit. Dyson makes is way around but Barthon leaps into the pit. At the bottom is the naga and battle is joined. The pit is only five foot square so there is not room for anyone else to jump down. Lorcan and Wiley lend their help with attack spells. The naga hits Barthon with two magical missile volleys that hurt him and Barthon is badly wounded but finally manages to defeat the creature.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

4/4/2019

After performing first aid on Barthon, the group retreats to a nearby barracks room to rest and finish healing. Lorcan lies in one of the beds while Kalin begins an hour long Repair Injury spell on him. Wiley and Dyson also lie down while Barthon and Darkthorn keep watch. After the hour long spell, Kalin attempts to awaken Lorcan but he does not wake up. They try to awaken the others but they too remain fast asleep. Finally Kalin prays for a Restore Consciousness spell and casts it on Dyson to awaken him. It works. With Lorcan and Wiley fast asleep, the rest of the group remains in the room for the night. In the morning, Kalin prays for another Restore Consciousness spell as well as a Remove Curse. He casts the former spell on Wiley and it awakens him, but slowly. (Using his single class ability) he prays for another Restore Consciousness and casts it on Lorcan, waking him up as well. Then he begins a four our ritual to remove the curse on Dyson. The spell is successful (with the help of a Luck point from Dyson) and the Evil Eye curse is lifted.

The group heads back to the room where they encountered the naga. They make it through three spell triggers with nothing happening. They investigate the statue at the head of the room which is holding its hands out as if asking for a donation. Dyson places a +1 Dagger in the hands and both he and the dagger disappear. After a bit of discussion, Darkthorn hears some distant shouting. When everyone is quiet, he is able to pinpoint it to the wall behind the statue. It is Dyson, who was apparently teleported to the room behind the statue, which the group had already searched.

The group decides to head over to meet him at the other exit from the room. Kalin casts an Invisibility to Undead 10' radius and the group goes through the strange room filled with non-corporeal zombies so as to avoid a couple of spell triggers. But there is one they can't avoid and it creates a Wall of Ice that splits the group. Lorcan and Darkthorn continue on and meet Dyson. The hallway that almost killed Kalin does not activate and Dyson rejoins with Darkthorn and Lorcan. They head back to the Wall of Ice and Lorcan successfully dispels it.

The group heads back to the undead room and checks out the other door. The room has a plane of magic across the doorway. Darkthorn enters but nothing bad happens. He, Lorcan and eventually Dyson search it but find nothing of interest.

The group decides to investigate another barracks room they had previously found which also has a plane of magic across the doorway. When Darkthorn enters, he disappears. Wiley puts up a Location spell to find him. The arrow moves even as it comes into existence and shortly thereafter, Darkthorn appears at the end of the hall. He had been teleported to the barracks room in the non-corporeal undead room and had simply run through it.

The group heads over to the room where they had previously found the roper. Kalin casts an Augury and determines that treasure is to be found beyond the roper. Lorcan casts a Solid Fog into the room, using Sorcery skill to make a tunnel through the fog. Darkthorn leads the way down the tunnel to the door across the room. It is locked so Dyson moves up and unlocks it. The group moves in to quickly search the small bedchamber but, when Dyson touches the desk, it explodes into a small fireball and catches fire. Everyone takes some damage, Dyson and Kalin the most (both failed their saves). Darkthorn's new Ring of Fire Resistance stops most of the damage and he only takes 2 points.

The group decides not to hurry. Lorcan casts a Deluge spell out of his wand and puts out the fire - and completely soaks the room. He counters it once the fire is controlled. They search more carefully. They find a magical mace and two scroll tubes. One is covered with a deadly poison which Lorcan recognizes. However, much was washed off by the Deluge spell. Among the ruins of the desk, they find a lump of silver metal and some tiny emeralds as well as tiny beads of silver.

The group recognizes the mace as a sort of Golem Slayer (+1 mace that is better against golems though they are not sure how much better). Barthon, who has no class C weapon, keeps the mace.

The first scroll tube is empty but the second contains a scroll of Protection from Undead which helps reduce the effects of undead draining attacks.

It takes many hours before Lorcan is able to successfully repeat his Solid Fog with a Tunnel trick to exit the room.

The group decides to depart the dungeon.

Outside it is about noon though heavily overcast. In the area of the dungeon, they find a path leading to the northwest. They follow it but the path disappears behind them. They eventually reach an intersection and turn north. As they travel, the path disappears behind them. They reach a point where Darkthorn senses something "pleasant" (Ranger with Environmental Sensitivity). He moves forward alone but it unable to determine the exact cause of the good feeling. Eventually the group continues on.

After about four hours, they reach another intersection. Paths lead to the right and left but Darkthorn is also able to discern one straight ahead. They follow that one for many hours until it reaches an intersection where there are signs of a long ago battle.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.
