Barthon and Ronco arrive with the stragglers from the kitchen as Wiley, Lorcan and Darkthorn finish battling the two ogres and the wolf. Barthon lends a hand. Darkthorn gets full advantage from his Death Axe, not only getting the death blow on each of the three opponents, but getting good healing effect (he rolled 8, 7 and 8 respectively vs the three opponents, healing a total of 23 points). Both Lorcan and Wiley are badly wounded in the battle, with Lorcan the worse off. Kalin uses his final CLW to heal him (rolling max effect).

For the next three hours, the group and the freed villagers travel in increments of for 45 minutes and then rest for 15, then travel 45 minutes and rest another 15, and so on. Their first break puts them at a narrow stream where water is plentiful. Fortunately a couple of the freed villagers from the giant's kitchens brought buckets and ladles with them so everyone drinks their fill.

At the third stop, they reach a larger river and the group entertains the idea of building a raft to flow down river. This would cause the dire wolves to lose the scent. Lorcan says that the Folding Boat can be commanded to a larger form (24 foot boat with a small cabin). He proceeds to unfold it to this dimension. They come up with the idea to float the freed villagers down river in multiple groups and then walk back up along the river. This will get everyone down river a mile or two and Darkthorn will only have to obscure a few tracks.

The plan goes off without a hitch and within a couple of hours, everyone is down river. It is after dark so the group decides to have everyone rest for the night. All of the villagers have boots and cloaks, given to them by the giants in preparation for wherever they were going to be marched off to by the slavers that were buying them. They have some food from the giant kitchens and Kalin can pray for three Create Food & Water spells a day. This can also be supplemented with foraging.

In the morning, Wiley casts Levitation on Darkthorn while Dyson uses his Helm of High Sorcery to cast a Mind Link. Then Darkthorn ascends as high as he can to scout out the surrounding terrain and look for a route that will take them in the right direction. He finds a suitable route, descends back to the ground and then the large group sets out for the Baronry of South Flaeness.

It takes them a total of six days before they reach the valley where they set off from and another day to reach the road that runs between High Port and Thief River Falls. The following evening, they reach Thief River Falls. During the day on the road, they come across the body of the man they had first encountered in High Port prior to setting out for the Giant Fortress. He was mentally unhinged and did not survive the trek back to civilization.

In Thief River Falls, they report to the garrison commander and give a full accounting of their adventures in freeing the captured villagers. Then they rest for the night. In the morning, they catch a boat down river carrying a written account of their adventures. They spend the next night in Mid Port and reach Deep Port the following night. They report to the military commander. He reads the written account of the adventure and adds a few questions but overall seems satisfied with the way things turned out. He tells the group to return at mid day the next day for their reward.

The group spends the night on the ship and returns the next day for their reward. They meet with the Chancellor of the Exchequer who tells them their reward will consist of magic items. He opens up a chest carried by a couple of guards and begins removing items.

The first item is a wand that he hands to Wiley. "This is a Barrier Wand," he tells him. "It can be used to create walls, or so the Royal Mage tells me."

Then he takes a pair of bracers from the chest and hands them to Lorcan. "These are called Bracers of Protection," he tells him. (OOC: They are PROT 7 Bracers of Protection)

He returns to the chest and removes a morning star of obvious quality. He hands it to Kalin and says, "This is a magical weapon of moderate power." (OOC: a +2 Morning Star)

Next he takes a small velvet pouch from the chest and removes a black pearl. He hands it to Dyson and says, "I'm told that this will fit in your helm along with the other pearls that are already there. It lets you do some sort of mental bolt." (OOC: gem for the Helm of High Sorcery that allows him to cast a Mental Bolt)

He returns to the chest and takes out a longsword. He hands it to Barthon and says, "It is a sword of moderate quality. Also, you can command it to light up by saying "ILLUMINATE" and turn if off by speaking "DARKEN"." (OOC: a +2 Longsword).

Finally he pulls out a pair of boots and hands them to Darkthorn. "These are Boots of Balance which I suppose will allow you to walk without falling down."

Lorcan and Wiley both know that there is more to them than that and can actually allow him to walk on unstable surfaces with sure-footedness.

The group departs and walks over to talk to the man who had wanted them to go to the Isle of Repose. He tells the group that he is still waiting for someone to get back to Deep Port but it will probably be at least another month and more likely two before he returns.

The group decides to spend the time training. They decide to spend two months.

Darkthorn spends 800 sp for 2 months to train general skills (no combat or magic)
Lorcan borrows 800 sp from Barthon to do the same.
Dyson spends 800 sp to do the same.
Barthon spends 900 sp to train combat skills.

GM: Let me know how Kalin and Wiley want to spend the time. Both have enough money to spend a couple of months training.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.
