The group descends the dirt and mud covered stairs leading into the Dungeons of Duplicity. Darkthorn looks for tracks but sees nothing but those of small animals. At the bottom of the stairs, the passage opens into a dimly lit room, as if once illuminated by magical lighting that is now fading with age. There are two doors and a passage leading out. On the far walls are three murals. The center mural features an arena scene with a warrior fighting a multi-headed hydra while a few other warriors watch from the stadium seating. Closer examination reveals that the warrior in the arena bears a striking resemblance to Kalin while those watching could easily be Darkthorn, Dyson, Lorcan and Wiley.

One of the doors is unlocked while the other is locked. Dyson attempts to unlock it but fails. The group heads down the passage. Suddenly two beams emanate from the ceiling and strike Kalin and Wiley. Both manage to shrug off the effects (both made their saving throws). Kalin believes the effect was probably magical confusion. Further analysis reveals a trigger in the passage the Darkthorn activated by passing through. Dyson uses Power Perception (using his new Helm of High Sorcery) and determines that it is a trigger and that it will likely not function as a trigger for quite a few hours to come. He attempts to permanently remove it and is only partially successful. He removes it but suspects that it will eventually come back, but probably not for many days.

The group moves on and finds that the passage ends in three doors in three different directions. They choose one and open it. It leads to a passage. They follow it and then suddenly mist begins pouring out of the ceiling. Dyson shouts out to retreat. The mist thickens and fills the hall quickly but the group keeps their heads and follow the wall back to the entry chamber.

They decide to open the unlocked door. It leads to an old barracks room with three bunks and three chests. A search of the chest reveals old and tattered uniforms. In the bottom of the third chest is a piece of parchment rolled around a small spherical object. The object turns out to be a pearl.

"Even the wizard's efreeti has been vanquished.
The wizard then cursed it to stay here forever
for its failure, with only a fountain for company,
it's in the ........ Our passage now has a guard behi......"

The group resolves to be on the lookout for a fountain and an efreeti.

Dyson and Darkthorn both notice a secret door on the north wall. The bed is attached to the wall and by turning one of the bed posts, the entire bed pivots opening the door. The narrow passage beyond goes about 30 feet or so and ends at another secret door that they easily find. Darkthorn opens the door and looks in - and is almost hypnotized by the swirling colors of one of the walls. He quickly retreats and reports what he saw, including some pillars. The group decides to have him enter looking down and get to a pillar. They tie a rope around his waist. He re-enters the room and, eyes downcast, moves forward - and is attacked by a tentacle that wraps around his waist. He manages to avoid the effects of the poison on the tentacle and the rest of the group hauls on the rope to pull him out. The tentacle lets go. Once out, they shut the door.

Lorcan and Kalin believe that it might have been a roper that attacked Darkthorn. The group decides to check another way.

The mist is still obscuring the passage leading west so they try the remaining door. Dyson had attempted and failed to open the door earlier but now Wiley tries and succeeds with a Spell of Opening. Darkthorn proceeds down the passage with the rest of the group behind him. The next room is empty except for four large tapestries. One shows a small barracks similar to the one they just left, another shows a room with a single bunk, another shows a tall mountain in a mountain range and the last shows a lighthouse on the shore of an ocean. None are entirely static. In the mountain and light tapestries their is clear movement of wind, water and wildlife. Even in the barracks tapestry, they see a small spider climbing a wall.

They leave them for now and head down another passage. At the end is a door that no one is able to open with brute force. Wiley steps up and casts another Spell of Opening and the door reluctantly unseals itself. Darkthorn opens it and proceeds into the large room where the far end is in shadow. He and the group move towards the dark end and are attacked with a cone of fire that emanates from a large, squat creature barely seen in the darkness. The fire only reaches Darkthorn who shrugs off the worst of it (made his save). The group moves forward and when the light finally illuminates the far end of the room, it reveals a large lizard and Lorcan recognizes as a Fire Lizard. The group moves forward and attacks.

The battle is difficult, with Kalin and Dyson getting the worst of it but the group eventually prevails and kills the creature.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

The group heals up using some of their healing spells and then searches the room. There is nothing in the room but Darkthorn finds a secret door in the west wall. The group opens it and follows the narrow passage for a hundred a fifty feet or so as it turns a couple of times and comes to a destroyed parlor. All of the furnishings have been smashed to bits. Decorations, glassware and pottery have been shattered into many pieces. Even the tapestries and rugs have been ripped into tiny pieces and flung about. The floor is littered with this debris making movement slow and a little treacherous. The only thing still standing is a badly chipped status of a large warrior. The investigates it and finds that a name was once inscribed on the bottom, beginning with an "F" and about 8 to 10 letters long but the letters are so badly chipped they are now just random indentations. Some think they can make out what used to be an "n" a few letters from the end.

There is a door beyond the statue and Dyson looks it over. It is locked but not trapped but he is successful in unlocking it. Darkthorn steps up and opens it and that is when the statue animates and attacks the closest person, who happens to be Kalin. A giant fist smashed down on him. Lorcan immediately recognizes that the statue is actually a stone golem and that the group does not really have the requisite level of magic weapons to be able to take it on. They flee through the door that Darkthorn opened into a small room with three chests, a table, chair and bookcase with only four books in it. There is also a candelabra on the table that radiates magic. All three chests also radiate magic when Lorcan checks them.

Dyson spends some time studying the chests without touching them and concludes that none are locked or mechanically trapped. The group uses the Lantern of Trap Detection and all three chests glow indicating the presence of a trap or traps. There is much discussion and the group decides that their best option is to have Dyson use the second gem of his Helm of High Sorcery to try to find and remove the magical trap. He determines there is a magical trap but when he tries to remove it, he sets it off.

The lid of the chest flies open and a skeleton with a scimitar rises up and attacks. A half second later, the other two chests also fly open and disgorge a skeletal warrior.

The battle begins but on the first round, Kalin is able to turn two of the skeletons. The effect is that they collapse back into the chest and the lids close. The group gangs up on the remaining skeleton and destroys it. A round after that happens, the other two chests again fly open and the battle begins again. This ones on longer. Kalin attempts to turn them again but rolls a Blunder. They teleport out of the chests and concentrate their attacks on Kalin for the rest of the battle. The group defeats them but Kalin is very badly wounded by the end of the battle.

In the bottom of each chest are a scattering of coins. They manage to find a total of 5 pp, 11 gp and 54 sp.

The group sets up camp in the room and spends the night. They eat some of the bacon jerky that they made from the wild boar they killed a couple of days ago. The night passes uneventfully.

The group comes up with a plan to get past the golem in the next room. As they are discussing this, someone asks if anyone every checked the chests for secret compartments. When it becomes apparent that no one did, the group quickly does so. Dyson finds a secret compartment in the bottom of one of the chests but is unable to figure out how to open it. Others also try but it has a trick opening mechanism where you need to push this and that and the other thing in the right sequence to open it. No on else is able to get it to work so Wiley uses a Spell of Opening and the group watches as the magic causes the right sequence to occur and the secret panel can then be opened. Inside are some jewelry and a potion. Only the potion is magical but Lorcan is only able to identify that it is a magical oil of some sort.

Wiley casts invisibility on himself and Dyson activates his Ring of Invisibility. Dyson leads the way out hoping that the golem will not be able to see him but it does. However, he is able to lead it in a circle, staying just out of reach of its attacks, as the rest of the group makes their way past and out of the room.

They continue exploring the dungeon. They come across multiple trigger wards, some of which Dyson attempts to remove but usually fails and triggers it. In a couple of cases, this results in a Wall of Fire, one of which splits the group but Lorcan is able to counter it. They also trigger a couple of Bolts of Energy as well as a Cure Light Wounds effect that hits Darkthorn and Dyson. They find a couple more barracks rooms, one of which has a very new looking bed with clean new linens and blanket. Lorcan checks it for magic and determines that it is magical and the magic is of the healing realm.

The group also finds the arena that they have seen in two different wall murals, both of which seemed to indicate that the group may have to fight solo battles in the arena while the rest of the group observes. The group decided not to enter the arena at this time and has turned around to check out other directions.

1/24/2019

The group investigated quite a few of the dungeon hallways but did not have much success with some of the rooms. One of the rooms had dizzying patterns on the walls, floor and ceiling that caused nausea. Kalin even lost it and vomited on the floor. Inside the room, Darkthorn came under attack from some unseen enemy. They never hit him but he backed out. Wiley used his Witchsight and was able to see that the room was filled with invisible undead. Lorcan used a Deluge spell to try to highlight them but they were non-corporeal and did not reveal them. The group backed away and closed the door. No one was ever hit.

They investigated a banquet hall, a kitchen and a cold room. They triggered a number of spell effects including one that caused Confusion in Dyson, another than gave him a Stoneskin spell, another that caused Kalin to be extremely clumsy for a while and the final one of the night that caused a Torrential Geyser to appear and attack Kalin. It may well have killed him but Dyson stepped in front with his shield and was able to block the effect.

When Dyson was confused, he opened a door and saw a beholder-like creature in the corner. He quickly slammed the door and ran and the creature did not follow.

The group also found another entrance to the room with the invisible undead. Dyson darted in to check out previously unseen parts of the room and was hit on his way out but only for a small amount of damage.

The group found quite a few locked doors that Dyson was not able to open.

1/31/2019

The group does some first aid and healing on Kalin and then moves on. They inspect the blank areas between the murals but see nothing to indicate a trap. A short distance later, the passage opens to a room with a neatly manicured grass lawn and four very rare trees. The room appears to be open to the sky and the sun can be seen shining through partly cloudy sky. There is a door on the opposite wall. The group starts to scan the walls but then sees a zombie-like creature step out of the opposite wall. Unseen are two more to step out from the blank areas in the hallway and attack Wiley. One hits him but does not penetrate his protection. Kalin turns the two in the back and they return to the walls while the one in the room advances. Dyson and Darkthorn combine to destroy it and then the group waits for the turned ones to return. They do not until Wiley has the idea to enter the room again. The group is set up to attack them and when they step out, they are ready. The battle is quick and neither of the undead every hit and penetrate anyone's protection. Kalin knows that they are not zombies. They could be wights or ghouls or some other zombie-like undead. The group never finds out.

They return and finish looking over the room. They find a secret door in one corner. They rest for their exertions and then open and enter. It leads to a room with invisible skeletons in each corner and a chest against the north wall. They shoot at Darkthorn and Lorcan, becoming visible. Lorcan moves towards one and stumbles into a pit. Darkthorn reacts quickly and prevents him from falling in. The pit goes all the way across the room blocking access to the skeletons. The group retreats and comes up with a plan. They take the table from the kitchen and, using Darkthorn's axe, turn it into a pair of long planks. Then they assail the room again. Dyson draws their fire and Darkthorn and Wiley carry a plank up and lay it across the pit, which is now closed again. Darkthorn runs across to take on a skeleton in one corner while Lorcan targets the other with a Torrential Geyser. He already put up a Wall of Water to prevent the other skeletons from attacking.

Darkthorn, Dyson and Wiley destroy both skeletons. They disappear when destroyed, leaving their short bows and quivers with remaining arrows behind. The group grabs them. Dyson checks the chest but is unable to immediately unlock it so he and Lorcan carry it out of the room.

Dyson is able to open it after about 10 minutes and finds it full of gems. None are magical so they group puts them into the Bag of Holding and moves on. They check out the other door which leads to a barracks similar to others they have seen in these dungeons. The group starts to enter but then Lorcan notices a plane of magic across the entrance to the room but beyond the door. Darkthorn has already passed through it. The rest of the group stays behind it while Darkthorn examines the room. He finds a secret door in the corner.

Wiley suggests that he try to exit the room through the plane of magic. He tries and ends up being teleported naked to one of the barracks cots. Lorcan suggests he look in the nearby chest to see if his stuff is there and he is relieved to find that it is. He quickly gets dressed again.

Lorcan comes through and he and Darkthorn open the secret door and proceed down the passage beyond. Part way down, Darkthorn hears a noise up ahead. Lorcan tosses his Light cantrip ahead and reveals that the passage opens into a room. At the narrow entrance is a large statue of a skeleton. The two move up but the skeleton statue doesn't move. The two return and convince the rest of the group to come through the plane of magic and join them. Darkthorn edges past the statue and into the room. There are two more statues in the room both looking in the direction of a chest in the corner. Lorcan puts up a Wall of Water between them and the chest and Dyson looks it over. He sees no traps though Lorcan sees magic on the chest. Dyson picks the lock and opens the chest. There is no reaction by the skeleton statues.

Inside is a folded piece of cloth on the bottom of the chest. On top of it are 12 items of jewelry and 7 arrows. One of the items of jewelry (a ring) as well as the folded cloth and the 7 arrows all radiate magic. The ring is level 2 on a scale of 1 to 3 while the cloth and arrows are level 1.

2/7/2019

Lorcan reaches and picks up one of the magic arrows. As soon as he does so, a trap triggers in the hallway leading into the room. Ten foot sections of floor begin rotating, making it very difficult for Wiley and Kalin who are in the hall. Darkthorn moves to the edge to try to grab Wiley and pull him to safety. Kalin manages to move closer to Wiley but then loses his footing and is crushed by the floor. His armor helps protect him from the worst of the injuries. Finally Wiley reaches and grabs Darkthorn, who was maneuvering to get a better footing. The result is that Wiley almost pulls Darkthorn into the trap but then Dyson grabs Darkthorn from behind. Meanwhile, Kalin manages to grab a hold of Wiley. Dyson and Darkthorn pull and all of them go tumbling to the floor, but in the safety of the room and out of the nasty trap.

Kalin uses his remaining CLW to heal the worst of the damage.

GM: Both Kalin and Wiley used Luck points - Kalin to move closer to Wiley and Wiley to prevent the loss of his sword which otherwise would have been dropped and lost.

Kalin uses an Augury to determine the effect of removing the remaining treasure from the chest and receives an indication that it is safe to do so. Nevertheless, Wiley casts a Levitation spell on Dyson prior to doing so.

The group removes all of the remaining treasure. Lorcan recognizes the ring as a Ring of Fire Resistance and the group agrees that Kalin should wear it. The seven arrows are recognized as basic (+1) magic arrows but with an additional property - most likely Arrows of Penetration. Darkthorn takes four and Wiley three. No one recognizes the cloak but Lorcan volunteers to wear it.

The floor trap in the hallway is still actively turning so the group spends time searching the room for secret doors but finds none.

After an hour, the floor trap resets and the group exits, using suitable caution in case it should trigger again. This puts them back in the room when attempting to exit causes the person to teleport naked to a bed and all of their gear winds up in the nearby chest. Kalin suggest that they all try to exit at the same time but the result is that everyone is teleported with two of the beds occupied by two people. Wiley suggests walking out backwards and lo and behold it works. Darkthorn is the first to try and is surprised that he is not teleported. Everyone else exits into the room with the trees where the group rests for the night. They eat more of their bacon jerky made from the wild boars that they killed on the way here.

GM: Both Darkthorn and Kalin have access to new spells - Darkthorn to 2nd level and Kalin to 3rd level.

In the morning, the group heads out. They past through a spell trigger that hits everyone except Darkthorn with a CLW. A couple more do nothing today. The group investigates a torture chamber and finds a secret door leading to a sitting room. In the room is a magical chair that no one touches. Darkthorn finds a secret door built into a bookcase. The group wants to investigate the books a bit more thoroughly but Lorcan has a point of power perception active so they open the secret door. A passage leads to a nicely appointed cell adjacent to the arena. A chest in the cell contains a Scroll of Feather Falling and a +1 Dagger.

The group continues to explore and finds another barracks. While Lorcan is searching a chest, a large spider (about the size of a cereal bowl) leaps out, scurries up the wall and begins shooting fire bolts at the group. Lorcan uses a Torrential Geyser but the spider easily avoids the blasts. Darkthorn tries shooting arrows at it but misses. Only Wiley is able to hit it using Magic Missiles but does not kill it. The group retreats from the room.
