We decide to keep an eye on Wiley throughout the night because of the curse. If he disappears, it means that he probably went back to the crypt and is suffering the tortures of the damned. However, when we head down into the Ghost Vaults of the ship, the feeling of doom disappears from Wiley.

We study the invested items in the morning (see notes in Treasure list).

We depart the ship to head back towards the temple with the plan to take the side road. We reach the side road and take it. It does not feel like natural forest but is not anti-natural terrain. As we progress, the plants seem less and less normal. We reach a location that has used previously as a campsite and we stop for the night. While it is still light out, a giant spider arrives among the tree tops. Darkthorn shoots and misses. Lorcan uses a Bolt of Water out of his wand and does 10 damage. "Spider Collective" comes to mind for Wiley, who rolled partial success on his monster lore roll. Kalin knows it is a spider collective made up of a lot of smaller spiders.

Lorcan puts up a Wall of Water but three of the spiders have already arrived by the time the wall goes up. Three others are kept out by the wall. The spider collectives try to attack Wiley but he gets a Levitate spell up just in time and ascends out of reach. Lorcan uses an Ice Storm spell to good effect, and does a lot of damage to all of the spider collectives but does not destroy any of them. Unfortunately it also does 25 points of damage to everyone in the group. Darkthorn fires arrows until he determines that they are not having much effect. The best attacks seem to be with torches. Fortunately the spider collectives ignore the rest of the group as they try to get to Wiley for a few rounds.

Then the collective goes after Kalin. Kalin flees safely through the Wall of Water. Darkthorn, who is now levitating thanks to another spell from Wiley, drops a flask of oil and a burning torch on the collective outside the wall. Three of the collectives have merged to form a larger collective, both inside and outside the wall of water.

Then the collective goes after Barthon and engulfs him. The group continues using fire to destroy it but they are also causing damage to Barthon. They eventually kill the one on Barthon but by then, Barthon is very badly wounded. Darkthorn gets another flask of oil from Dyson and uses it to finish off the one outside the wall of water.

Presumably the spider collectives were going after Wiley due to the death curse on him.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

We spend time doing first aid and healing after the battle with the spider collectives. Barthon was very badly wounded in the battle.

The next day, after travelling for about an hour, we see a pile of bones ahead on the path. It is a variety of bones but most are human including warped human. Darkthorn prods it with a 10 foot pole. A tentacle lashes out from the pile. Kalin thinks it is a bone crawler. We advance and attack. It is fairly easy to kill. Darkthorn cuts into it to see if it has treasure. We find 2 gems and a magic arrow (Minor Arrow of Direction but we don't know everything about it).

We continue down the path. A bit later, Darkthorn is attacked by a Blood Soaker Vine that attacks out of the jungle canopy. One vine attaches itself to him and starts drinking his blood. We battle it. Darkthorn gets hit again and then Barthon gets hit. Once hit, the tentacles drink blood. Once Darkthorn rids himself of the vines attached to him, he begins shooting at the body of it (some 20 feet up in the trees) with magic arrows. Lorcan has already hit it with a Torrential Geyser to good effect. The combined attacks of Darkthorn's arrows and Lorcan's spell eventually kills it.

We move on and reach the mining camp several hours later.

We see a dirt rampart heading down. Darkthorn sees old boot tracks. There are large, alien plants growing around the camp that look dangerous. Darkthorn shoots one with an arrow. It hits it, which causes it to writhe around and then lift off the ground and move towards us. It speaks telepathically to Lorcan (the only one who failed his mental save) and says that we will not get his unobtainium and we better leave before he and his friends come after us. There are 19 of them. We decide to retreat.

We head to the beach about couple hundred yards away. Kalin prays for a Messenger spell and we wait until a sea gull comes within range (140 yards). He casts the spell and we send a message to the Sea Ghost to come around and anchor out. We want to use it as a safe base of operations from which to deal with the mining camp.

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

Set up camp on the beach to wait for the Sea Ghost.

A red snake comes out of the sand and attacks. It is a Blaze Boa. They can do heat damage. Need magic weapons to hit.

Dyson hits it with a confirmed grievous and it tries to dive back into the ground but Lorcan, Barthon and Dyson combine to kill it before it can flee back into the sand.

Another one appears about 10 minutes later. We kill it fairly easily. The rest of the night passes uneventfully.

In the morning, we make plans to reconnoiter the mining camp and do hit and run attacks. As we are heading through the jungle, we are attacked by an impossibly large spider-like creature. We try to flee but it grabs up Kalin and Lorcan. It seems to be a massive and hugely deformed version of a regular spider.

Darkthorn uses a Monster Lore invested item. He learns that attacking it would be fatal to the group. It's name is Addath. It is subterranean. It is immune to poison, cold and fire. It has multiple types of attacks - swallow whole, 5 tentacle attacks.

Lorcan asks the skull that has been following him around about the creature. The skull explodes in blackness. The creature drops Kalin (Kalin used a Luck point to make this happen). Lorcan does the same thing (using a Luck point).

GM: This is where we stopped for the night.

12/12/2019 (GM-Jason)

As we do first aid and healing on Kalin and Lorcan, Wiley levitates and watches the progress of the massive creature.

We head back to the mining camp and see none of the strange, telepathic plants. We see a pile of goop that is about 3-4 feet across and 18 inches high. It radiates residual magic at level 1.

Darkthorn looks into a tent. He enters and takes a look around. It looks like things have been knocked around a bit.

We see another pile of vegetable matter. It might have once been one of the plants we saw here last time.

We search the tent that looks like it might have been the leaders. Locked chest with poison needle trap. Dyson removes the trap (with the use of a Luck point). He opens the lock. Inside are thousands of copper nuggets. There is also a bag and a small coffer. There is also a smell of rotten meat. The coffer radiates magic at level 2 on a scale of 1 to 5. Darkthorn takes out the bag and looks inside. Inside are pieces of dried meat or something. Something burned into a piece of meat, like an X. Lorcan spills them out and sees that they are tongues. There are 14 and each has a different brand. Some are dried while others are not.

The magic on the coffer is chaotic, like raw magic. Lorcan pulls it out and puts in on a table. Then he takes it outside and opens it up. Inside he sees black, glowing rocks. The moment Lorcan sees the, he feels sick to his stomach. It might be the unobtainium. Wiley and Lorcan make some degree of success with Everything Lore and think it might be it. Kalin (rolled a -26) is not so sure.

We find logs of mining activities. 14 different writing styles over the years. Different levels of education and intellect in the writings. At the end there are just tally marks. Last entry has a date with 7 tally marks.

Kalin does an Augury and determines with great danger comes reward but gets the impression that the danger is greater than the reward.

We travel through the day and night and get back to the town around 5 am. The gate is closed.

We use Water Walking for most of us to get to the ship while Wiley and Barthon swim. We attempt get underway immediately but are unable to do so until Wiley enters the Ghost Vaults (extra-dimensional space on the ship).

We make good time out to sea. We make it back to Deep Port by evening. At some point during the journey, those who had been drained feel better. They do not get points back yet but feel better. When Wiley comes out of the Ghost Vault, he curse departs and makes its way back to the island.

Lorcan does an Identify ritual on the highly magical quarterstaff.

The alchemist comes aboard after we dock and asks about the mine.

Visit with Malor in the morning. We give him the signet ring and half of the coins that we found and tell him that we will identify the rest of the stuff and then split up the treasure.
