Spelljammer
Research
Bonus for researching topics at a library. May also be used for researching new ideas, inventions and spells.

Research skill can also be used to peruse a book to determine how useful it is likely to be for the researcher's purpose. For example, the character finds a book in a store about monsters and wants to determine how useful it will be in improving their Monster Lore skill. In game terms, the GM makes the roll for the character and resolves the roll on the following table.
  • Absolute Success - The researcher can determine both the max ranks and the number of ranks. Gain a +5% to future rolls within the next 30 minutes.
  • Success - The researcher can determine both the max ranks and the number of ranks.
  • Near Success - The researcher can determine the approximate max level the book will allow within a rank. Subtract 2 ranks from the max and then roll 1d3 and add. For example, if the book allows max rank to 8, roll 1d3 and add 6 to determine what the researcher thinks it will allow. Do the same thing for number of ranks allowed. For example, the book would normally allow 3 ranks of the skill, roll 1d3 and add 1.
  • Partial Success - The researcher can determine the max level the book will allow within 1-2 ranks. Subtract 2 ranks from the max and then roll 1d4 and add. For example, if the book allows max rank to 8, roll 1d4 and add 6 to determine what the researcher thinks it will allow. Do the same thing for number of ranks allowed. For example, the book would normally allow 3 ranks of the skill, roll 1d4 and add 1.
  • Failure - The researcher is unable to tell how useful the book will be.
  • Absolute Failure - For max ranks, subtract 4 or add 2 and then add 1d4 and for number of ranks simply roll 1d4. This means the character could actually end up getting it correct by luck alone.
  • Blunder - The GM will make up something that will be way off.
