Spelljammer
Brawling
The character knows how to fight with their fists, clubs and ad hoc weapons.

Strike Chance is (DEX x 3) + (Level x 5).
  • Damage: The die rolled for damage depends on rank (see below). Damage is also modified by STR (see Characteristics - Strength) and rank. Damage increases by 1 at ranks 4, 8, 13, 20 and 30. For example, at ranks 1 to 4, damage is 1d4. At rank 5, it increases to 1d4+1. At rank 6, it increases to 1d6+1, and so on.
    • Rank 1-5: 1d4
    • Rank 6-9: 1d6
    • Rank 10-13: 1d8
  • Damage Type: Half of all damage done is non-lethal. The attacker can choose whether to round up or down (i.e., if the attacker does 5 damage, he can choose to make it 2 lethal and 3 non-lethal, or the other way around).
  • Number of Attacks: A brawler can attack twice per round through rank 9, three times at ranks 10-15, four times at ranks 16-24 and five times thereafter.
  • Ad Hoc Weapons - For truly ad hoc weapons such as a chair, add +2 to damage but subtract 10 from strike chance. The GM may modify this based on the ad hoc weapon.
  • Real Weapons - Brawlers can pick up a use a real weapon in a brawling manner. Strike chance is reduced by 10 while damage is one die lower than normal damage for that weapon and they lose any pluses. For example. If the weapon normally does 1d10+1 damage, it will do 1d8 damage in the hands of a Brawler (plus rank and STR bonuses). The true weakness of a brawler using a real weapon deals with their opponent. If their opponent is skilled with the weapon that the brawler is using, the opponent gains a +2 to their Defense for each of their ranks in the weapon. If the opponent also happens to be a master of that weapon, they gain an additional +2 to the Defense for each rank of master skill. Intelligent monsters who don't use weapons may gain a bonus to their Defense at the GM's discretion as they are generally familiar with how to deal with opponents using weapons. If the weapon is magical, they gain only half the bonus for SC but full bonus for damage.

Someone skilled with Brawling also gains a STR bonus when using the Grab Maneuver. The bonus applies both to attacking and holding their opponent, as well as attempting to break free when an opponent has grabbed them. The bonus is +1 per 4 ranks of Brawling skill (round down).

Fighter, Mariner, Thief and Barbarian characters automatically gains this skill at a rank equal to their overall level. They cannot raise it higher than their overall level.
