Bartering is the ability to negotiate with someone for a better price than the seller would normally give the buyer. It should be assumed that all merchants are good at bartering so only the character needs to make the roll. If the merchant is especially good or bad at bartering, the GM can assign a modifier to the character's roll.
Level of Success | Roll | Discount | Notes |
Incredible Success | 226 or higher | 30%
Absolute Success | 176 to 225 | 25%
Success ++ | 161 to 175 | 20%
Success + | 131 to 160 | 15% | |
Success | 111 to 130 | 10% | |
Near Success | 91 to 110 | 5%
Partial Success | 76 to 90 | 2%
Failure | 06 to 75 | None | The seller is firm in his price and will not deal. |
Absolute Failure | -25 to 05 | +5% to 10% | Bad luck, either the item is in high demand right now, another buyer has expressed an interest, or the seller simply doesn't like you. The firm price is 5%-10% (1d6+4) percent over the price listed in the equipment list. |
Blunder | -26 to -75 | +15% to 20% | Really bad luck. The seller has a firm offer from another potential buyer and will only sell it to you at 15% to 20% (1d6+14) over equipment list price. |
Blunder - | -76 to -125 | +25% to 50% | The seller has had multiple offers for the item or otherwise knows it is in high demand. He will sell it to you for 25% to 50% higher ((1d6 x 5) + 20). |
Blunder -- | -126 or worse | +100% to 200% | Price Gouging. The seller knows that there is a strong market for the item and will only sell it to you at 2 to 3 times (1d3 x .5) + 1.5) the cost. |
Simple Rules
If the player simply wants to buy some normal (non-magical) stuff, without a lot of interaction with the GM, use these simple rules. Roll barter and apply the following modifier:
- Absolute Success - 20% discount
- Success - 10% discount
- Near Success - 5% discount
- Partial Success - 2% discount
- Failure - No discount
- Absolute Failure - 5% over original asking price (high demand, other offer or seller doesn't like you)
- Blunder - 15% over original asking price (very high demand, multiple offers or seller really doesn't like you)
