Spelljammer
Cooking
This skill allows the character to prepare appetizing meals. This skill may also be used to make a normally unappetizing food into a tasty meal (e.g. Purple Worm steaks).

At higher ranks, the cook becomes a chef and can learn special recipes that have magical effects.

Prepare Meal
Eating well can also enhance healing. If the group is eating their required daily intake of food, the cook can prepare one hot meal a day that may improve healing. The cook must have the required resources available, including dishes, utensils, a sustained heat source and a sufficient quantity of raw or preserved food. The cook makes a cooking roll (((KNOW - 15) x 3) + (Cooking x 5)) and compares the result to the following table.

A character with Cantrips skill gains a +2 to their Prepare Meal roll per rank of Cantrips if they use a spell point for the Spice cantrip during meal preparation.
  • Absolute Success - Extremely delicious! Everyone healed 5 points
  • Success - Delicious! Everyone healed 3 points
  • Near Success - Good meal. Everyone healed 2 points
  • Partial Success - Not bad. Everyone healed 1 point
  • Failure - Edible. No healing.
  • Absolute Failure - Barely edible. No healing.
  • Blunder - Barely edible. No healing and everyone must make a Normal Save or suffer from food poisoning.

Butcher Animal
This task relates to the character's ability to efficiently butcher and killed animal to recover edible portions. Skill roll is equal to (((DEX + KNOW) - 30) x 1.5) + (Rank x 5).

Prepare Meal for Large Group
At rank 8, the character is also skilled in directing a large kitchen with several cooks, waiters, etc. Skill roll for preparing a meal for 10 or more people using the resources of a large kitchen that includes at least two helpers for every 15 people, is (((KNOW + CHA) - 30) * 1.5) + (Cooking x 4). Subtract 10 from the skill roll for every worker under what is needed (example: the cook is preparing a meal for 30 people, which requires 4 assistants but he only has 3 assistants - he suffers a -10 to his skill roll).

A character with Cantrips skill gains a +1 to their Prepare Meal for Large Group roll per rank of Cantrips if they use a spell point for the Spice cantrip during meal preparation.

Culinary Apprentice
A cook can apply to become a Culinary Apprentice if they meet the following prerequisites:
  • Cooking 8
  • DEX 15 (sorry Kalin)
  • INT 15
  • KNOW 15
  • WP 16
  • MA 15 *
  • Have 1,000 sp for training

* A cook can apply to become a Culinary Apprentice with an MA of 15 but to actually become a Culinary Apprentice, they must have an MA of 17. They can buy up their MA during training, going into the hole in EXP if necessary

The cook must seek out a Culinary Master to train him. In general, a Culinary Master can be found in any good-sized city. The master will test the character (to ensure they have the above prerequisites). Then they must pay 1000 sp for 6 months of training. During this training, the cook's MA must advance to 17 if it is not already there. They must also purchase rank 1 of Spell Energy and Power Perception, both of which are required to prepare Wondrous Recipes. He also receives a magical Ingredients Box that contains enough ingredients to prepare one meal for each of the Wondrous Recipes he has learned. This box will automatically preserve ingredients, preventing them from decaying. It can hold enough ingredients for 10 Wondrous Recipe meals (each meal is enough to feed a group of adventurers - the GM need not come up with an exact number).

At the end of this training the cook becomes a chef and is known as a Culinary Apprentice. The character learns his first Wondrous Recipes. He learns one common Wondrous Recipe that he will automatically succeed with. He learns a second common Wondrous Recipe that he may attempt with a Wondrous Recipe (Common) skill roll.

After training, he also gains the following benefit if he does not already have them:
  • Exp multiple of 1.25 for MA, Spell Energy and Power Perception unless his multiple is already better than 1.25

At rank 9, he learns a third Wondrous Recipe (Common).
At rank 10, he learns his first Wondrous Recipe (Uncommon).

NOTE: Need to come up with some more common recipes. The book only has 1.

Culinary Journeyman
At rank 11, the cook attains the rank of Culinary Journeyman. He learns a new Wondrous Recipe (Uncommon). He may choose one of his two Uncommon Wondrous Recipes that will automatically succeed.

When a Culinary Journeyman prepares a normal meal (see Prepare Meal above), the healing effect is increased by 2. This only applies if at least partial success is rolled.

At rank 12, he learns a third Wondrous Recipe (Uncommon).
At rank 13, he learns his first Wondrous Recipe (Rare).
At rank 14, he learns either 1 common and 1 uncommon Wondrous Recipe, or he learns a second rare Wondrous Recipe.

Culinary Master
At rank 15, the cook attains the rank of Culinary Master. He learns another Wondrous Recipe (Rare). He may choose one of his rare Wondrous Recipes that will succeed automatically.

When a Culinary Journeyman prepares a normal meal (see Prepare Meal above), the healing effect is either increased by 4 or doubled, whichever is higher. This only applies if at least partial success is rolled.

At rank 16, the cook learns another rare Wondrous Recipe.
At rank 17, he learns his first very rare Wondrous Recipe.

NOTE: What about Legendary Wondrous Recipes

Wondrous Recipe Skill Rolls
Wondrous Recipe skill rolls are as follows:
  • Common Recipe - (((DEX + WP) - 30) x 1.5) + (Rank x 4)
  • Uncommon Recipe - (((DEX + WP) - 30) x 1.5) + (Rank x 3.5)
  • Rare Recipe - (((DEX + WP) - 30) x 1.5) + (Rank x 3)
  • Very Rare Recipe - (((DEX + WP) - 30) x 1.5) + (Rank x 2.5)

Even if the cook automatically succeeds with a Wondrous Recipe, he should make a skill roll. Anything less than Success is treated as Success but he may still attain Absolute Success.
