A trained, mundane combat technique relying on hearing, movement, and spatial awareness.
General Concept
This represents disciplined training—listening for breath, reading footwork, feeling air displacement—not supernatural awareness.
Requirements
- Minimum PER 16 to purchase
- PER 17+ required to advance beyond Rank 5
- PER 18+ required to advance beyond Rank 8
Effects (Passive)
Each rank grants +1 effective PER for combat PER rolls vs unseen targets on the Fighting Blind table/rules.
Rank 5 - "Minor Area Awareness"
Situational Awareness (Non-Combat / Movement)
- In dim/partial visibility, sense obstacles within 5 ft + 1 ft per 2 ranks
- In total darkness, sense obstacles within 3 ft + 1 ft per 3 ranks
This only detects:
- Solid objects
- Large terrain features
- Immediate movement
(No fine detail without a PER roll)
Limitations
- Requires hearing
- If deafened, all benefits lost
- Does not negate the +20 bonus enemies gain against blinded targets
- Cannot detect:
- Invisible creatures unless they make noise
- Silent or hovering enemies
Rank 12 - "Melee Awareness"
When fighting an unseen opponent:
- If the target is adjacent (within melee reach), treat your PER roll as one category higher on the darkness table (pitch black treated as cave, cave treated as cloudy night, etc.)
- If the target is not adjacent, there is no benefit. Non-adjacent opponents cannot be targeted by means of this skill.
Old description (EXP Multiple was 375)
Each rank of this talent adds 2 to the person's effective Perception when making a PER roll while in combat with an unseen target. This assumes that the character can hear. If they can neither see nor hear, they are basically helpless.
This talent also allows the character to better move around in darkness. In "normal" darkness, where the character's eyes adjust to the gloom, allowing him to see a little, the character can sense objects out to a range of 10 (+3 per rank) feet. In total darkness, the character can sense objects out to a range of 5 (+2 per rank) feet. In either case, the character can only sense the presence and general outline of objects. Perception rolls are allowed to determine if the character can learn more about objects that they sense. For example, the GM may tell a character moving total darkness that they sense a large table ten feet to the right. The GM may ask for (or secretly make) a perception roll to see if the character also senses the presence of a scroll setting on top of the table. |
