Spells that affect the character with this talent are dampened with regard to duration and effect. The duration and effects are reduced by 5% per level with this ability. The character can voluntarily suppress his dampening effect to let beneficial spells work at normal efficiency but this requires conscious effort. If the character is unconscious, then he cannot suppress the dampening effect and beneficial spells cast on him will be dampened.
This effect occurs before saving throws for the spell, if applicable.
When the ability is suppressed, it remains suppressed for the entire round.

NOTE: With regard to damage-causing spells, this is essentially Damage Reduction (similar to the Damage Reduction ability of martial artists and some monsters). Only one source of Damage Reduction is allowed per spell. Thus, if a martial artist with 25% DR and rank 2 in this ability (10% DR) is hit with a damage causing spell, he gains only the benefit of the higher of the two Damage Reduction sources - in this case, his martial artist ability.
Example 1: Boric has this ability at level 10 and gets hit with a Lightning Bolt for 42 damage. His level 10 in this ability reduces the effect by 50% so the maximum damage he will take is 21 points. However, a Lightning Bolt spell already allows targets a saving throw for half effect so before he applies this talent, he attempts a saving throw. If he fails the save, then this ability kicks in to reduce the damage to 21 points. If he makes the save, then the damage is reduced to 20 points and then this ability kicks in to reduce it to 10 points.
Example 2: Boric has been wounded and asks a cleric to cast a Cure Light Wounds spell on him. He suppresses this ability so that he will get the full effects of the Cure Light Wounds (if he did not suppress it, then the amount healed would be reduced by 50%). Unfortunately, during the same round that he has suppressed the ability for the Cure Light Wounds, he gets hit with a Lightning Bolt. Because he had the ability suppressed, he takes the full effect of the Lightning Bolt. |
