Rule Category:Combat
Rule Name:Mounted Combat
This document details the effects of mounted combat on all other combat maneuvers.

As a general rule, someone who is rank 8 or higher in Horsemanship, and is riding a mount that is combat trained to level 3 or higher, will not have negative modifiers in combat.

Horsemanship Table
  • Blunder Fall off horse. 2 x Luck roll to avoid Grievous injury from being stepped on by horse.
  • Absolute Failure Fall off horse. 1d4 damage. 2 x DEX to land on feet. Fumble object(s) in hand.
  • Failure Action fails. 4 x DEX to avoid falling from horse. If fall indicated, drop held object(s) and 4 x DEX to land on feet. If fall not indicated, 4 x DEX roll to avoid fumbling object(s) in hand.
  • Partial Success -25 to action.
  • Near Success -10 to action.
  • Success No penalty.
  • Absolute Success No penalty. Need not roll again for number of actions equal to rank (minimum 2 actions)

Melee Combat - Mounted vs. Mounted - In Place
This table is used when one mounted combatant is facing off against another mounted combatant with only minor combat maneuvering. Compare rank with Horsemanship skill and the horse's Combat Level to the table below to determine modifiers to Strike Chance and Defense, as well as how often a Horsemanship roll is needed.

As a general rule, if the character is rank 8 or higher in Horsemanship, and the horse is combat trained to level 3 or higher, there are no modifiers for mounted combat.

00If an untrained rider finds themselves in melee on an ontrained horse, they must make a Horsemanship roll at -25 every time they are attacked or attempt any action. Best action is to dismount and let the horse flee.

Melee Combat - Mounted vs Unmounted
All of the same Mounted vs Mounted rules above apply but the mounted combatant gains a +10 to Strike Chance, and a +5 Defense, against the unmounted foe. These modifiers are cumulative with the normal modifiers list under Mounted vs. Mounted above. Very small weapons used against a mounted opponent, such as daggers and blackjacks, suffer a further -25 SC and do only half damage (before PROT).

Ranged Combat - In Place
This table is used when using a ranged weapon from the back of a mount that is standing still, and the combatant is not beset by melee combatants but is being attacked with ranged weapons. If not being attacked with ranged weapons, add one to the horse's Combat Level for the purposes of this table.

    1. Target stationary = +10
    2. Target walking (normal TMR) = -0
    3. Target running (2x TMR) = -10
    4. Target sprinting (3x TMR) -20
    5. Target fast sprinting (4x TMR) = -30
    6. Target dodging = -20
    7. Target is on a moving mount or wagon = -10
    8. Attacker on walking mount (normal TMR) = -0
    9. Attacker on running mount (2x TMR) = -10

    Example:

    • -10 because she is on a running mount.
    • -10 becase she is shooting backwards.
    • For a total of -60 to her strike chance. She must also make a horsemanship roll with every shot.

Meanwhile, her pursuers (rank 8 horsemen on combat level 3 horses) have the following modifiers:
    • -0 for being rank 8 horsemen on combat level 3 horses.
    • -10 because their target is running.
    • -10 because their target is on a moving mount.
    • -10 because they are on a running mount.
    • For a total of -30 to their strike chances. They do not need to make horsemanship rolls.
