Magic Items
Rule Category:Treasure
Rule Name:Stacking Protection
The following rules apply to magic items that provide Protection. They can be overridden by the specific item description (e.g., a ring that specifically states that its Protection stacks with magical armor).

In general, there are two types of Protection; base Protection and bonus Protection. Base Protection is usually provided by armor, LUCK-based Protection or Bracers of Protection. These do not stack with one another. The best value is used. For example, Delana is wearing a leather jerkin (PROT 2), has a LUCK of 22 (PROT 3) and has Bracer of Protection (PROT 4). Her base Protection is 4.

Only two bonus protection items can be used at one time. For example, if Delana have a +3 Ring of Protection, a +2 Cloak of Protection, and a pair of boots that provide +1 Protection, she only gets the bonus protection of the ring and cloak.

Stacking rules for common Bonus items:
  • Ring of Protection - Does not stack with magical armor. They stack with non-magical armor, LUCK-based Protection and Bracers of Protection.
  • Cloak of Protection - Does not stack with magical or metal armor. They stack with leather armor, reinforced leather armor, LUCK-based Protection and Bracers of Protection.
  • Magic Helms - Many magic helms provide a bonus to Protection. This bonus stacks with magic armor and LUCK-based Protection but not with Bracers of Protection. They do not stack with Rings of Protection (use the higher of the helm or ring PROT).
