Miscellaneous Information

LANI (OOC): The player in me wants to have Lani turn and help Barnas, where her weapons will be more effective, but the role-player in me says no, she is not that experienced.

TYRA (OOC): I had similar thoughts. Perhaps you can allow a 2x INT roll to have it dawn on the more combat aware to consider how the group can be more effective against the different undead.

GM: I'm good with that. Those who are fighter types (Lani, Martin, Syl and Tyra) can make INT rolls to see if it dawns on them to try a little more coordination. If you make it, then it occurs to you to ask for more information from the other battles and then you can act on it next round.

LANI: INT roll [rolled 27 vs. INT 14, 2x roll]

SYL: INT roll [rolled 92 vs. INT 19, 5x roll]

SYL: Nevermind - nothing to see here; just going to continue to poke the bones with my spear...

TYRA: INT roll [rolled 8 vs. INT 16, MADE BY HALF!]

GM: I wanted to add that you can consider this both an INT and PER roll. Since an 8 still makes an average INT/PER roll by half, you can also assume that she is able to see that the ones on Barnas and Shaarilla are a lot less fleshy than the ones on her and Morty. She heard Morty say that the latter two were zombies and can guess that the ones on Barnas and Shaarilla are skeletons. You can further assume that crushing weapons will likely be more effective on the skeletons than the zombies.

MARTIN: Int Roll – [rolled 28 vs. INT 20, 2x roll]

GM: Although Martin is kind of isolated, in this battle, it occurs to him as well that he should ask for updates from others. He hear's Lani's shouted question. He hears responses from Barnas, Tyra and Syl and knows that there are at least two kinds of undead here. One type - skeleton - seems to be a difficult foe for those using slashing weapons, and the other type - zombie - seems to be difficult for those using crushing weapons. Clearly Martin is facing a skeleton when he would be better served against a zombie. This occurs to Martin over the course of the round so he can attack normally this round but then move back onto the stairs next round and seek a different foe.

LANI: Lani shouts out, "Tell me what everyone is facing. KC and I are fighting one. I see Tyra fighting one and Barnas fighting one. Any more? Mine has a bunch of guts and stuff hanging out. Is that what everyone has?"

BARNAS: Hearing Lani the young man replies, "No guts here... just bones."

TYRA: "Yeah, Morty called the fleshy ones zombies and my club is less effective that it should be. I bet blades would do much better against them. For the skeletons, bashing weapons should do the trick instead of swords or spears. Call out if you have a skeleton or zombie on you and see if we can match up our weapons better. I have two zombies here!"

SYL: "Martin and I have a skeleton here; our weapons are almost useless against it. Do you think we can switch Tyra??

TYRA: "Yes, You and I should try to switch and then maybe Lani and Barnas can switch too." Turning to Morty, she nods. "Can you slide behind me? I'll try moving back to my right towards Syl."

TYRA (GM): If she has any time to move in Round 3, she'll move 5 ft to her back and right if Morty is able to move in time. That way she'll be ready to switch to either Syl or Shaarilla's opponent for Round 4. She doesn't mind allowing them a free attack or to pursue her if they choose.

LANI: "Tyra, having Barnas and I switch won't do anything. We are both using crushing weapons.

GM: Here is the map again. I’ve overlapped the melee opponents because it better shows that you are locked in melee combat and there is a certain intertwining of space as you maneuver around.

GM: Syl is in the best position to switch targets by turning and running towards the one on Morty.

GM: Lani could also switch to attacking the skeleton on Barnas easily, leaving the zombie for KC to handle.

GM: One thing I forgot to take into account (and won't change now) is that daggers, by default, are piercing (class A) weapons, which do even less damage to a zombie than a crushing weapon. If KC wants to slash, he can (and should) but suffers a -10 to his SC.

GM: Shaarilla is about to spread her wings and leap into the air which will save her and open up space but could cause some interference with those around her. In fact, Barnas, Morty and Syl should all make DEX rolls to avoid the wings.

BarnasBARNAS: Hearing Lani the young man replies, "No guts here... just bones

BARNAS: Init [rolled 3], SC [rolled 86-35 = 51 - Hit DEF 51 or less], Dmg [rolled 8], Threat [rolled 29]
KCKC: "Lani, I am going to step back to prepare a spell for when you switch to the skeletons i`'ll use it than as you will move out of the damage zone."

KC: 5 ft free move back to disengage, betting on the zombie mindlessly attacking Lani and will prepare shout spell once disengaged and hold action for use in round 4.

KC: Prepare SK spell Shout if able to disengage. [rolled 37 vs cast chance of 42 - Successful Cast Chance!] damage in 14 ft long cone 10ft diameter is [rolled 4 4 5 1 - Total: 14] and [rolled 4 2 3 6 - Total: 15] will maneuver to get the two zombies in front of me on round 4 and not my allies in the cones path when Lani withdrawals on round 4. OR if the zombie follows me than I guess I will have to attack it on round three.

Attack 1: INIT [rolled 10] SC [rolled 78-18 = 60 - Hit DEF 60 or less] Damage [rolled 6] AP 5 [rolled 41] THREAT [rolled 55]
Offhand: INIT [rolled 6] SC [rolled 74-74 = 0 - Hit DEF 0 or less] Damage [rolled 4] AP 5 [rolled 34] THREAT [rolled 43]

GM: The zombie seems focused on Lani so KC is fairly certain that he will be able to back away. However, he is unsure of being able to target an undead with an area effect attack without also hitting a friend. Lani and Tyra are both in melee with their targets so they are in constant motion, including circling motion. It's hard to hit a target in melee with an area effect attack without also getting their opponent(s).

KC: unsure about hurting his comrades with his spell, (we'll just call it GM slap to the forehead for the novice mages spell casting nuances) after hesitating a bit thinking it over........ he will just attack the zombie with his shiny knives instead of a spell.
MartinMARTIN: Slowly it begins to dawn on Martin that, perhaps this opponent would be better handled by something other than a sharp blade made for cutting. He makes one last attack and will step back up on the stairway (5 foot free move) to begin to look for the more fleshy opponents the others are talking about. "Hey - I've got a bony one over here - someone with a mace or club should have this guy!"

MARTIN: Attacking this round:

Attack 1, Init [rolled 5], Strike Chance [rolled 83-10 = 73 - Hit DEF 73 or less (Crit DEF 19)], DMG [rolled 8], Threat [rolled 57]
MortyMORTY: "Yeah, if you have ones that are all bones those are almost certainly skeletons, and require bashing weapons to break apart effectively. This is my last shot, hoping it will count for something, then I may as well be fully defensive to keep this one busy, this new shield should help. Tyra if you can move on some skeletons with your club, you should, I can survive a few hits while the sword users get into position if necessary.

MORTY (GM): I actually have a Protection of 2 from my Luck, but it works out to 1 since I also have Easily Bruised. Unless you already added +1 for that...

MORTY TECH: Morty will try to prepare to exchange positions with someone with a blade if they become ready to do so. He will fire again at his target, while doing his best to prepare his shield to deflect the enemy's blows. Init: [rolled 9], To-hit [rolled 98 - Automatic miss!], [rolled 4 1 1 (+3)- Total: 9] dmg.
LaniLANI: Lani wishes they were fighting creatures that were not so resistant to blunt weapons. She glances briefly to her right to look at Tyra's foe but it looks no different than her own. She attacks again using weapons kata.

Attack 1 (mace) - Init [rolled 9], SC [rolled 84-33 = 51 - Hit DEF 51 or less], Dmg [rolled 5], Threat [rolled 18]
Attack 2 (fist) - Init [rolled 9], SC [rolled 90-36 = 54 - Hit DEF 54 or less], Dmg [rolled 4], Threat [rolled 75]
ShaarillaSHAARILLA: Shaarilla was beginning to panic, getting badly injured while her bow was completely ineffective against something made of just bones. In desperation she tried a spell she never actually used before, Shocking Grasp.

Attack 1, Init [rolled 7], Cast Chance 57$ [rolled 31 vs cast chance of 57 - Successful Cast Chance!], DMG [rolled 4], Threat [rolled 14]

GM: If you attempt to cast a spell while in melee, the spell is automatically disrupted, except in very limited situations - namely if the spell has no components or verbal components only. Shocking Grasp has both Verbal and Somatic so it is automatically disrupted if attempted in melee combat. Sorry. The good news is that the groups is starting to understand that they need to maneuver around so as to be more effective against the undead, while protecting the most vulnerable (including Shaarilla). With both Lani and Tyra making their INT rolls (Tyra made it by half), they should be able to make some adjustments next round. In the meantime, Shaarilla is best off going full defensive.

SHAARILLA: OK, so even her melee spell is useless. Back to my first thought, can Shaarilla retreat to the fly to of the stairs at the bottom of the map to get away from undead?

GM: Shocking Grasp would have to be cast prior to entering melee.

GM: The ceiling is not high but may be high enough. Go ahead and send an DEX roll to see how well she does. The skeleton will get a free attack on her as she flees combat but it might be worth it.

SHAARILLA (OOC): I don’t see Shaarilla ever entering melee intentionally, so I don’t think she’ll ever be using that spell.

SHAARILLA (update): Being attacked by a foe she had no means to hurt, all Shaarilla could think of was to flee. Spreading her wings, Shaarillia tried leaping into the air and flying to the top of the staircase they entered the room though (bottom of the map). [rolled 99 vs. DEX 21, 5x roll]

SHAARILLA: Using luck point to avoid horrible outcome… [rolled 22 vs. DEX 21, 2x roll]
SylSYL: In the mean time, she will attack again the bag'o bones with her spear

TECH: Init [rolled 11], SC [rolled 70-25 = 45 - Hit DEF 45 or less], Damage [rolled 8], Threat [rolled 73]
TyraTYRA (GM): Does it seem like Tyra's making much progress against her opponents. My guess is that it's marginal damage and that we have a ways to go before dropping any of the opponents.

TYRA: Tyra continued to shift in combat to shield Morty from the undead, all the while continuing to attack the one pursuing the gnome.

TECH: Normal Attack - Init: [rolled 8], Attack: [rolled 87-41 = 46 - Hit DEF 46 or less], Damage [rolled 4], Threat: [rolled 83]

The group begins to understand that they have more than one type of undead attacking them. Both zombies and skeletons are attacking and zombies tend to be resistant to crushing attacks while skeletons are hard to hurt with slashing attacks. Neither seem to be hurt much from piercing attacks. It takes most of this round to understand that they need to realign their attacks but, for this round, things continue.

KC and Lani continue to attack a zombie. KC considers backing away and attempting to use an area effect spell against the zombies but he worries about hitting friends so he ends up attacking. He makes sure that he uses his knives for slashing rather than stabbing as stabbing doesn't seem to do much. He hits with one of his daggers. Lani also hits it with her mace and fist. The zombie missed Lani. (KC did more damage with his single hit than Lani did with both of hers combined).

Barnas has the right weapon to fight the skeleton facing him and he hits solidly, cracking bones. The skeleton misses him.

Tyra attacks the zombie on Morty, and hits but for little actual damage. Morty uses the final shot of his Mage Tech pistol but misses. Both of the zombies miss.

Shaarilla, facing a skeleton with no effective weapon, launches herself into the air. The ceiling is not high but she manages to pump her wings enough to reach the top of the stairs to the south. Her wings hit Tyra, Morty and Syl as she does so but not enough to knock them down. The skeleton claws at Shaarilla as she flees but misses. The skeleton, now with no immediate foe, moves up and attacks Tyra, hitting for 7 damage, reduced to a single point by her new ring mail.

Syl and Martin attack the final skeleton, he with longsword and she with slashing spear. Both hit. The skeleton attacks Syl but misses.

GM: Go ahead and send your attacks for round 4.

GM: With the knocking around caused by Shaarilla, Morty got separated a bit from Tyra. Tyra now has two opponents, of which one is much bonier than the other. She assumes it is a skeleton.

GM: Either Syl or Martin can move over to attack the zombie on Morty but the other should stay to fend off the skeleton.

GM: Lani can disengage and move over to help Barnas.

GM: Shaarilla is no longer in melee but if both Syl and Martin move away to attack zombies, the skeleton that they were fighting could come after her.

GM: For those who have weapons that can do two kinds of damage, be sure to indicate what type of damage you are doing and, if it is not the primary for the weapon, subtract 10 from your SC. This would include KC with the daggers (-10 SC to slash instead of pierce) and Syl with her spear (-10 to slash instead of pierce). Damage is the same.
