The Star Sprite is rising quickly. Too quickly. Shaarilla hits a couple of heavy branches in her rush to get out of the jungle. She takes a deep breath and forces herself to remain calm. She ascends the rest of the way out of the jungle into the clear warm air above Telemore. A glance around reveals no other spelljammers in sight. With luck Brute Force did not or could not readily follow the group.

GM: Let me know what you want to do. It is clear to the group that the jungle of Telemore is a dangerous place - too dangerous to simply set down and rest for the night.

GM: I forgot to mention this before but, on the 20 minute trip from Spelljammer to Telemore, Morty checked the water tanks of the Star Sprite and found them bone dry.

GM: Slight correction on the damage Martin took. I forgot about his Armor Spell so reduced the damage by 2 more points. He now has 7 HP.

LANI: "Does anyone know anything about the Kingdom of Celestian? I'm thinking we might want to head to Sagar and heal up if we think it is safe. My concern is that Brute Force might be able to more easily find us there."

SHAARILLA (GM): Isn’t the Star Sprite still charged from when we landed? We haven’t been down on the ground for very long after all… Also, how much magic power did Shaarilla after use for the trip (or more importantly, how much does she have left).

GM: You have used 5 spell points so far today.

SHAARILLA: “Well that is certainly an unpleasant place! Now what do we do? Morty, can you check for damage?"

MORTY: "Yup, already looking, you're not seeing any indication in the helm, I assume?"

GM: Morty finds some minor damage caused by running into tree branches. He expects to be able to fix it one he gets some tools and wood.

SYL: I know some about the Kingdom based on my Astrogation Training. Sagar is the farthest extent in this part of the phlogiston of the Kingdom of Celestian. The capital of the Kingdom is Center Point which is located a few thousands miles from Sagar. Sagar is located on a tiny planetoid. The planetoids are very plentiful in this part of the phlogiston. Additionally, just as there are rocks and planetoids floating freely, there are also large bodies of water. One such globular lake called the Delta Sea is floating near Sagar and it is dozens of miles in diameter. There are other numerous small towns in the vicinity of Sagar that are not Anchor Points (areas that show up when an Astrogator activates the helm).

SYL: I think we will be somewhat safe from detection there because there are a lot of tiny spelljammers just like us based out of Sagar and the surrounding villages that derive their living from fishing the Delta Sea.

SYL: My recommendation is we head to Sagar to heal up, rest, use our new money to purchase real adventuring supplies and do some research on Telemore - what should we might expect when we head back there. I still think that is the most likely home of the Amber Key; or if it isn't there we might be able to find some hints as to where we should look. And maybe find out what the Key(s) will eventually lead us to??

MORTY (GM): Morty had a held action that could have been used to fire at the descending tick. I am not sure it has any relevance, but I suppose if we'd killed it it would be one less giant tick to menace us when we return.

BARNAS: "It will take at least a day or two to heal back up. Doing so from a place where we might resupply and gain more information seems wise"

BARNAS: OOC would there be a temple of Thoth at or near Sagar?

GM: That would be a good question to ask Syl in character. When Barnas does so, Syl shrugs and replies, "I can't say for certain that there is a temple of Thoth there but Sagar is a moderate sized city with lots of temples so it wouldn't surprise me to find a temple of Thoth located there."

GM: I will send the next turn tomorrow with the assumption that Shaarilla flies the Star Sprite around Telemore, doing a complete fly-by of the underside. I will also assume that once her current spell point runs out, Morty will take the pilot's seat so that he can begin to get a feel for the tiny spelljammer (Morty is the only other Spelljammer Pilot in the group). Once the underside fly-by is complete, I will assume that Syl will feed a point into the helm to activate the astrogation and, assuming nothing new pops up that wasn't there when KC activated the helm previously, will plot a course to the Sagar Anchor Point.

GM: Tyra is the only one in the group with First Aid skill and she is currently -30 to all activities so I will further assume that no first aid will be done. Martin (-20 to all activities) and Tyra will be resting in the hut.

TYRA: Tyra couldn't remember the last time she felt this weak after fighting such a vicious creature. She knew she was at the edge of collapsing and had taken a lot of damage. She smiled weakly at the others and retreated to the hut where she laid herself down.

TYRA: When asked, Tyra agrees that heading to Sagar is the best course of action. Hopefully, the group will be able to blend in with the locals and not stick out in case Brute Force comes looking.

Shaarilla continues to pilot the Star Sprite clear of the trees and then heads for the edge of Telemore. About 15 minutes later she reaches the edge and steers the spelljammer down to start a fly-by of the underside of Telemore. With the exception of those resting, the others scan the underside as the Star Sprite flies among the upside down canyons and spires that descend from Telemore. When Shaarilla's current spell point runs out, she cedes the pilot chair to Morty to allow him to start getting the feel for the Star Sprite. The entire group notices a dramatic reduction in speed as Morty is not able to coax near the same performance out of the helm as Shaarilla was. Morty flies the ship for about 10 minutes, covering a couple of miles and then turns the pilot's seat back over to Shaarilla who completes the fly-by.

The underside of Telemore was very convoluted and there might easily be any number of entrances from beneath but then they might all lead to dead ends. It will take a much more careful scan to determine if there is an entrance to the ruins from the underside but that is a quest for another day.

Syl, sitting in the astrogator's seat, feeds a spell point into the helm to activate the map. A three dimensional map appears above the helm for all to see. It is a bit more in depth and extensive than the map that KC had called forth previously but still only shows the same number of available Anchor Points. Spelljammer is about 100 miles away while the Sagar Anchor Point is a bit over 200 miles away. Fortunately that is within Syl's safe Astrogation range and she quickly plots the course and sends it to Shaarilla to execute. The Star Sprite leaps forward in a doppler effect blaze of light and settles into the rainbow fog of Otherspace.

The ship travels through Otherspace for two hours. As with the phlogiston itself, the temperature of Otherspace is cold. The temperature on the decks of the ship is not far above freezing. The group bundles up, especially ensuring that Tyra and Martin are as comfortable as they can be during the trip.

After two hours, the ship abruptly transitions out of Otherspace and is back in the phlogiston. Five miles away is a small planetoid that extends off to the right and left, up and down for about 15 to 20 miles, curving inward in the nature of a planetoid. The surface is a mixture of rocky ground, grassy plains and small forests. The entire planetoid looks to be about 30 to 40 miles in diameter.

On the surface curving away ahead and above, they can see a moderate sized city nestled between forests and farmlands.

Looking about them in other directions, they see more distant rocks and planetoids. There is one each about 50 miles to the right and left and another about 25 miles behind the Star Sprite. Another floats about 50 miles away behind and to the right of the spelljammer. Visible beyond the larger planetoid that is Sagar is the Delta Sea - a globular body of water floating in the phlogiston. From where you float, you can see a ribbon of blue that connects the Delta Sea to the distant rock 50 miles to the left. The ribbon continues from that rock to the one 25 miles behind the Star Sprite and thence to the one 50 miles to the right. From there, it continues towards Sagar. It is too far away to see details, but the group can envision a river of water tunneling through the phlogiston and connecting the rocky outposts. Those with Jirdunian Lore wonder if this is a contrived river created by the powerful magics of that long gone race or if it was always this way.

Shaarilla feeds another of her dwindling spell points into the helm and powers the Star Sprite forward towards Sagar. Almost immediately she begins to feel the gravity of that giant land mass pulling the ship forward. She reorients the Star Sprite and flies it towards the city. Other tiny spelljammers can be seen coming and going from Sagar in the direction of the Delta Sea following the river that floats through the phlogiston. Those knowledgeable about such craft (i.e. Spelljammer Lore) suspect that most of those tiny spelljammers are capable only of normal movement and are incapable of making Otherspace jumps.

Once over the city, Shaarilla sees a landing field littered with tiny spelljammers. She pilots the Star Sprite towards it and brings it gently down until it is resting on the grassy field. As she is doing so, a couple of men walk over and wait for the Star Sprite to come to rest. Then they move up and one of them speaks, "5 silver a day for parking here and that includes water to refill your tanks. For an extra 5 silver a day, we will keep watch on your mooring lines and have a watchman keep an eye on your spelljammer."

He looks over the ship a bit more carefully and adds in a conversational tone, "I don't recognize your craft or the name. You must be here from Spelljammer."

GM: The Star Sprite does not currently have mooring lines so you will need to do some minor provisioning. Looks like Lani and Morty are your Rope Mastery people so they can rig up mooring lines once you purchase them. In the meantime, you can use ropes that you have in the group to secure the spelljammer.

GM: I split up the coins that you found in the undead crypt, took out the 10% for those with the tithing flaw, and then took out 25 silver from each person to donate to the party treasury (to pay for things like mooring fees). That means those with the tithing flaw each got 416 silver and those without it got 465. I added this money for everyone except Morty and Syl. For Morty and Syl I am still showing that they haven't yet spent their original 300 silver. I know they both bought equipment but I don't have the spend. If you know what you spent on equipment, let me know and I will update. Otherwise I will figure it out.

GM: I quickly figured out how much Morty and Syl had spent and now their share has been added to their character sheets.

LANI: When the man tells the cost, Lani says, "I think the 5 silver a day is good. We can make sure that we always have someone here to keep an eye on the mooring lines and the Star Sprite. I suggest we pay for a couple of days at least."

SHAARILLA: “Sounds good to me. Will we be camping out here, or finding and inn?”

BARNAS: The young man listened as the others made plans and had ideas. He had no objections to setting aside funds for the ship

BARNAS: When Shaarilla ask about camping or finding an inn he replied, "Camping on the ship would be cheaper allowing more funds for use elsewhere, but if someone wants to spend their coins on a nice bed I would not stop them."

BARNAS: "Do we know anything about this place and its culture? I would not want to accidentally break a law or given an offense"

LANI: Lani looks about and sees a pleasant, grass-covered field moderately warmed by the distant sun. "I'm fine sleeping on the ground here. It looks pleasant."

The man waiting patiently to collect the mooring fees overhears their conversation and says, "It rains most nights here."

LANI: Lani struggles for a moment to remember what rain is and says somewhat dubiously to the man, "You mean like water falling from the sky? How much water is it?"

"It's rain," the man replies, it can be heavy at times."

LANI: Lani turns to the rest of the group and says, "I suppose that means that a couple of us should stay here and watch the Star Sprite and the rest go and find an inn. I volunteer to stay." It is obvious to everyone that she is looking forward to finding out more about this water falling from the sky phenomenon called rain.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla hops down to the ground, spreading her wings to make that a gentle dissent. She then bends down and pokes at the ground, then stands up again and looks around. This is the first time she’s been off a ship and not flying though the phlogiston (she never got off the ship at Telemore), the first time she’s actually standing on one of the worlds she’s heard about! She’s exited and a little bit scared at the same time.

MORTY: "We may want to establish a fund for the Star Sprite and its maintenance. The minor damages we took from the tree branches on Telemore are mostly superficial, but I don't even have the proper tools to work the wood yet. Unless one of you is a closet carpenter that I don't know about... I guess I don't really need any more personal equipment anyway," Morty trails off with a mutter.

SHAARILLA: “I’m already carrying about as much equipment as I can carry. Other than replacing food and arrows, I don’t really need any more personal equipment either. I’d rather spend the money to keep Star Sprite in tip top shape.” It’s obvious that Shaarilla is very pleased with having a starjammer of her own, even if it is a small one.

GM: I took 25 sp from each person for a party treasury which could also be used to pay for repairs to the Star Sprite. There is 203 sp in there now. If the group wants it to be bigger, I can pull more money from each person's share.

Lani, who is temporarily carrying the group's funds, pulls out 10 silver and hands it to the man. Since she will be staying with the Star Sprite, she hands the group's fund's to Shaarilla.

"Okay, that gets you forty eight hours." He jots down the time in his notebook. "You can stop into the guard shack," he adds pointing to a distant building, "any time to ask how much time you got remaining."

He departs with his accomplice.

GM: Let me know who else, if anyone, will remain with the Star Sprite with Lani while the rest of the group heads into town.

The group heads across the grassy field in the same direction taken by the man who collected their money. They pass the guard shack and eventually reach the dirt road that winds among the buildings of the city. As they reach the center of town, they see a number of taverns and a few inns. They settle on the Ram's Head Inn. Inside, they pay for a pair of moderate sized rooms next to each other and on the second floor, with a cost of 8 sp per night each. Shaarilla counts out 16 sp for 24 hours and the group collects the keys and heads up to their rooms.

GM: Let me know what the group wants to accomplish in Sagar. Obviously Barnas will be praying for and casting CLW spells on Martin and Tyra the next day.

LANI: Lani made it clear before the group left that she wanted to find a good weapons store and purchase a longsword.

BARNAS: Healing of course. Plus seeing if he can find a temple of Thoth. Research in to the Spelljammer keys. See if there is any kind of messaging service. After all it looks like the 5 day trip will be extended, some people might be worried if the time passes and they do not show up. Gear-wise Barnas would be interested in armors (although he still can't afford anything to great yet) and musical instruments.
He is also willing to use his skills to help other get good deals.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla mostly is interesting in just sightseeing, so she’s happy to tag along with anyone else. She does have a few things she’d like to do: get a second quiver to add to the bracelet, Find a weapon shot for Lani, study a the spell book to try and learn Spell Store, and last thing before going to sleep would be casting Mage Armor for the next day. Otherwise it’s just seeing what’s available and at what price, and seeing a new city for the first time ever.

MARTIN: Martin is mostly just interested in laying down until he can get some healing. 

MARTIN: Once healed, Martin will be looking for some armor.

TYRA: Once healed, Tyra will want to shop for weapons. A war axe is high on her list. She's considering a bow with some arrows too. She'll eventually want a larger shield too but rounding out her weapon choices is the top priority.

TYRA (GM): Steve, is there a way to tell what weapons are single handed and which are two handed? Flail, morning star, and war hammer were the weapons I wanted to verify specifically.

GM: All three are one handed weapons.

TYRA (GM): Okay, battle axe is two handed, right?

GM: Correct.

KC: Weapons and Leather armor are tops on my list. I would like to see if I can find a quiver that if I walk up a wall or on a ceiling will not dump out all of the arrows in it. That and some throwing daggers would be nice.

GM: I just noticed that Barnas has improved his spell casting and also gets three 2nd level spells. Let me know what he wants to pray for.

BARNAS: His First Level Spell will remain the same Bless, 2 CLW, and Protection from Evil

BARNAS: His second Level Spell will depend on what he expects. If he expects to do a lot of Healing (like now) then 2 Accelerated Healing (for those with Minor wounds, and Healing Sanctuary (to get all the Healing boost he can)

BARNAS: When the party is healed up and we are exploring then 2 Auguries and a Silence.

BARNAS: Also I just thought we might want to look in to some Lore books and maybe healing potions and scrolls. Why yes I realize I do not have nearly enough gold for all the things I want... But it does not hurt to look into things.

LANI: I haven't yet heard anyone else volunteer to stay back with the Star Sprite so for now I'm assuming Lani is guarding it by herself, which she is perfectly okay with.

Once the group is in their rooms in the inn, Tyra and Martin go to sleep. The rest of the group uses a few silver to have some food delivered to their room. The food is delivered about 10 minutes later by a couple of serving wenches, who deposit the food on the table in the center of the room and then depart. Martin and Tyra are in the other room resting.

As Barnas, KC, Morty, Shaarilla and Syl are eating, there is a knock at the door. KC gets up and cautiously answers it with one hand on one of his finely wrought daggers that were gifts from the Spirit of Spelljammer. A nicely dressed man of above average height is standing there. His hair is neatly trimmed and he is clean shaven. Rogue places him as a servant of some kind.

"I bear an invitation from my employer, Mr Areegi Morton, to meet with him at the Dark Night tavern tomorrow evening at a four bells and a quarter (8:30 in the evening) on a matter of potential employment. Will you accept this invitation?"

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla glances at the others before asking, “How do you know of us?” Shaarilla wasn’t expecting employment offers, and was curious as to way a new and unknown group was being approached.

KC: “I see news travels fast in these parts. I will take it ant talk it over with my friends and we will decide it we ant to apply. Can you give us any information on Mr Morton? What does he do?”

KC: After dinner and the discussion about possible employment, which he is all for. He will take the news back to Lani at the Star Sprite and stay with her there. With Brute Force, no one should really be alone. Not that she could not defend herself well.

KC: "I say why don't we go see what Mr Morton has to propose. Maybe we could get some of the fees up front to help us decide on what to get."

Interrogating the servant yields no results as the man was sent simply to convey an invitation and accept an answer of either yes or no. The group briefly discusses it and decides there is no harm in at least hearing what Mr. Morton has to say the following evening. They accept the invitation and the messenger departs.

KC departs shortly thereafter, returning to the airfield to assist in keeping watch on the Star Sprite. As evening progresses, more and more spelljammers descend on the airfield to moor. Without exception, they all smell strongly of fish.

Once KC returns, Lani takes the opportunity to visit the water pump, finds an available bucket and fills it with water. She returns and pours the water down the spigot into the water tank of the Star Sprite. She ends up making 12 trips with the 5 gallon bucket before the tank is filled. With water sloshing out of the bucket as she carried it from the pump, she concludes that the water tank holds about 50 gallons of water.

Eventually the rock on which the city of Sagar is located rotates out of direct line of sight of the distant sun and it is night in the city. As the man who collected their mooring fees predicted, it rains during the night and, for a few minutes, the rain is very heavy. When the rain first starts up, Lani heads outside and revels and frolics in the rain until the cold drives her back into the covered hut on the Star Sprite. The nighttime temperature gets down into the mid 50's but with blankets available, Lani and KC stay comfortable and take turns keeping watch.

At the Ram's Head Inn, the group sleeps for the night. Barnas wakens occasionally to check on Tyra and Martin but they are not getting any worse and he hopes they will feel much better in the morning when he is able to heal them.

When morning comes, Barnas spends time in prayer and receives his daily spells. He immediately declares the room in which Tyra and Martin are convalescing as a Healing Sanctuary. Then he casts a Cure Light Wound spell on each of them, followed by an Accelerated Healing spell.

GM: Barnas can roll two CLW spells for Martin and two more for Tyra. I will take the best of each set and apply the +20% Healing Specialist bonus.

BARNAS: Healing for Martin Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 2 4 (+4)- Total: 10]

BARNAS: Healing for Martin Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 1 6 (+4)- Total: 11]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 5 4 (+4)- Total: 13]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 3 2 (+4)- Total: 9]

GM: After healing and the night's rest, here are the party HP:

Barnas 39/44
KC 34/38
Martin 21/45
Morty 35/41
Lani 28/50
Shaarilla 26/26
Syl 47/47
Tyra 18/61

GM: So Tyra is still at penalties but no one else is. Presumably you will want to spend a couple more days healing up.

GM: Those who wanted to cast Armor spells before going to sleep, go ahead and send your cast rolls and the effect of the Armor spell.

SHAARILLA: Slow cast Mage Armor (trying multiple times if needed)
Attempt 1: [rolled 40 vs cast chance of 42 - Successful Cast Chance!] Effect [rolled 4]
Attempt 2: [rolled 25 vs cast chance of 42 - Successful Cast Chance!] Effect [rolled 5]
Attempt 3: [rolled 14 vs cast chance of 42 - Successful Cast Chance!] Effect [rolled 5]

In the morning, the group splits up with Barnas, Tyra and Martin remaining in the room, which they have for a few more hours unless they choose to pay for another night, and Syl, Shaarilla and Morty heading out to see what they can find in town. They quickly find an establishment called Gautam's Esoterry with, as the name indicates, an esoteric collection of items many that would be popular with mages. While the store contains many things of interest, six items catch their interest: an air mage scroll of Ice Construction for 95 sp, a dark mage scroll of Star Life for 100 sp, an E&E mage scroll of Sending for 165 sp, an illusionist scroll of Phantasmal Force for 200 sp, a transformation mage scroll of Hold Person for 150 sp and a Ring of Defense for 600 sp.

After browsing the store and concluding their business, they depart and continue to look around. They find a couple of low grade weapons and armor stores but the quality of the equipment is poor. Then they happen across Books and Bindery, a store that sells and repairs books. There are quite a number of books in the store. After browsing for a bit and asking questions of the proprietor, they find three that really stand out: Grinding Teeth (a book about monsters that might help Monster Lore), Long Lost Civilization (a book about the Jirdunian race) and The Language of the Jirdin (a primer for learning and improving the Jirdunian Language). Prices are 105, 60 and 250 sp respectively.

GM: Neither Syl nor Shaarilla have Research skill but Morty does. He can make an Analyze Book roll for each book to get an idea of how much it could help with Monster Lore, Jirdunian Lore and Language Jirdunian.

GM: Also let me know if there are other lore books you might be interested in. Include Luck rolls with each book.

BARNAS: When he hears about it the young cleric would be interested learning more about the two books about the Jirdunians.

SYL: Is very interested in the dark mage scroll of Star Life for 100 sp.

GM: I will mark off the 100 sp and add it to your Magic Item list. Presumably you plan to learn the spell.

SYL: Although we found poor quality weapons and armor, poor is better than none, which is what she has now. Leather Armor would be good, but even a leather vest would be an upgrade. Also, a sling would be acceptable as a second weapon until she can afford a drow hand crossbow (her dream missile weapon).

GM: Sorry, my point was that you can probably find some better quality weapon and armor shops in Sagar if you keep looking. Right now I am resolving the magic shop and the book store. My assumption is that the three of you will then return to the inn and let Barnas, Martian and Tyra head out to take a look.

SYL: Does not currently know much (OK - nothing) about the Jirdunians but would like to in the future and thinks all three would be useful.

SYL: Would like to look for a book on the history of Telemore and anything about the Silver, Amber (etc. ??) keys of Spell Jammer

Telemore - LUCK roll [rolled 45 vs. LUCK 17, 3x roll]
Keys - LUCK roll [rolled 93 vs. LUCK 17, 6x roll]

GM: You find no books on either subject.

KC: He is interested in the language primer and any other lore books he can find. He will wait on getting either leather or reinforced leather for later.

Plant and Herb Lore [rolled 12 vs. LUCK 18, 1x roll]
Animal Lore [rolled 16 vs. LUCK 18, 1x roll]
Poison Lore [rolled 63 vs. LUCK 18, 4x roll]

GM: You find multiple books on both Plant & Herb Lore and Animal Lore. Let me know what you want for a max rank you can learn, and the number of ranks the book can give you and I will give you a price for each.

KC: Here are two books.

Sagar’s Farmers Almanac - Plant and Herb Lore (max rank 6; max # rank learned 2) - 55 sp
Syanna’s Animal’s - Animal Lore (max rank 6; max # rank learned 2) - 55 sp

GM: I added a price for each. The price includes a discount for Barnes negotiating the price.

MORTY (GM): I was unaware of an Analyze Book task until I looked it up, and it specifically states that you roll all such rolls for me.

GM: Here are the results of Morty's assessment of the books:
  • Grinding Teeth (book) - Monster Lore (max rank about 7, max number of ranks you can buy 1 or 2)
  • Long Lost Civilization (book) - Jirdunian Lore (max rank about 8, max number of ranks you can buy 2 or 3)
  • The Language of the Jirdun - Language Jirdunian (a language primer that will allow the reader to buy up to rank 6 or 7 with the language)

SYL: so if the max is 7 or 8 but all we can learn is 2 or 3 would it then make sense to find a kindergarten level book that maxes out at rank 3 or 4 and save these it will we find plenty of options in future??

GM: Yes, you can do that. It is generally easier to find books that are more general, and more limited in nature.

BARNAS: When he hears that others are interested in the same Lore book he is he offers, "Maybe we can split the cost and share?"

GM: If you are interested in books, maybe the best way to move forward is to indicate how much you will donate towards books and your priority list. Once I get this from everyone interested in books, I will do the accounting and add the books to the Star Sprite Equipment List (under Player Documents on the website). Book list so far, including prices (modified for Barnas negotiation), is:
  • Grinding Teeth (book) - Monster Lore (max rank about 7, max number of ranks you can buy 1 or 2) - 99 sp
  • Long Lost Civilization (book) - Jirdunian Lore (max rank about 8, max number of ranks you can buy 2 or 3) - 55 sp
  • The Language of the Jirdun - Language Jirdunian (a language primer that will allow the reader to buy up to rank 6 or 7 with the language) - 240 sp
  • Sagar’s Farmers Almanac - Plant and Herb Lore (max rank 6; max # rank learned 2) - 55 sp
  • Syanna’s Animal’s - Animal Lore (max rank 6; max # rank learned 2) - 55 sp
  • Basic Foods - Cooking skill and recipes - 25 sp

BARNAS: If he needs to Barnas will cover all of the following

Long Lost Civilization (book) - Jirdunian Lore (max rank about 8, max number of ranks you can buy 2 or 3) - 55 sp
The Language of the Jirdun - Language Jirdunian (a language primer that will allow the reader to buy up to rank 6 or 7 with the language) - 240 sp
Basic Foods - Cooking skill and recipes - 25 sp

BARNAS: He is more then willing to share with anyone willing to split the cost. Ideally an equal split for all interested parties.

SYL: is willing to help pay for the Jirdunian books (after she gets her armor and weapons)

TYRA: Tyra wouldn't mind reading the Grinding Teeth book (monster lore). Depending on the prices for the morning star and kite shield, she should have 20 silver left over to help with the cost of that book.

LANI: Lani may never read any of the books but she sees advantage in having people in the group with the knowledge so she will donate 25 sp towards book purchases.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will also donate 25 sp towards books. She’s likely to at least skim them (justification for everything lore), but may not spend time to study them.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will pay for a cookbook for the group. She has no interest in cooking herself, but she is interested in eating, and would rather have someone who knows how to cook!

KC: He spent 269 silver on items and that leaves 140 silver towards the Language Primer.

GM: The four books you want the most (monster lore, Jirdunian lore, Jirdunian language and cook book) add up to 419 sp. Tyra, Lani, Shaarilla and KC have donated a total of 210 sp so far. Let me know who else will donate and how much. Barnas has offered to make up the difference so you might say he is willing to donate 209 sp at this point.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will donate an additional 50 sp. Other than magic, she doesn’t really have much to spend money on anyway...

SYL: Will donate 50 sp towards the books leaving her 39 sp.

GM: Just to avoid having to worry about timing, let's assume that everyone is able to get out and visit the various shops in Sagar over the course of the day. At some point, a couple people will head to the airfield and relieve Lani and KC and they can get into town as well.

As the group explores Sagar for equipment, they find a couple more shops of significant interest. One is called Slash, Pierce and Crush and is a weapons store. They have good quality weapons of all types including some magical weapons that are probably out of your price range right now. These include a +1 Longsword for 810 sp, a +1 Mace for 405 sp, a +1 Short Bow for 405 sp and a goodly supply of +1 arrows for 10 sp each.

A second store of possible interest is The Armoury that sells all manner of armor and shields of good quality. They too have magical equipment, including a set of +1 Reinforced Leather Armor for 600 sp and +5 Shield (LR) for 300 sp.

GM: Note that when I say "good quality" I mean normal adventuring quality, unlike the earlier stores you found that had inferior quality equipment that you would be making saving throws for every battle.

LANI: When Lani is relieved from keeping watch on the Star Sprite, she heads into town and joins others looking to purchase weapons. When they find Slash, Pierce and Crush, she looks longingly at the magical longsword but knows it is beyond her budget right now. She finds a non-magical longsword and purchases it for 270 sp.

TYRA: Tyra asks Martin if he would like a large round shield. She's thinking she might buy a kite shield but would expect to not get much in return to sell her large round to a merchant. If Martin wanted to own a shield, he could help her buy a new kite and she'd give him her current shield.

TYRA: Tyra is planning to buy a better weapon. She's thinking about a war axe, though if a battle axe is one handed she'd prefer that. She's also considering going with a morning star, instead and ditching her war club. If she can upgrade her shield to a kite with Martin's help, that is another priority. Finally, if there are funds left she's considering getting a short bow with a quiver of arrows. That is lower on the priority list.

MARTIN: "How much silver do you think you'll need? I'm planning on buying some armor. The Armor spell I learned works well, but it's just not quite enough protection."

MARTIN: (GM) Martin's character sheet shows that he has a large round shield but I can't remember where he acquired it - I think scavenged from one of our battles?

GM: Unlikely that you scavenged it from a battle since the only 2 battles you have fought did not have opponents with shields. I assume you probably bought it with starting money.

TYRA (OOC): Yeah, I wasn't sure if Martin bought one since he bought a long sword and I believe that takes up too much of our starting funds. SteveG, let me know if Martin wants to acquire a large round
shield.

MARTIN: Not a problem – how much silver did you want for the shield?

TYRA: Tyra wouldn't mind reading up on monsters but she's more interested in weapons than a book at this moment.

SHAARILLA: When back at the inn resting, Shaarilla will ask to borrow the spell book for a while so she can try to learn the Spell Store spell: Learn change 95% [rolled 13]

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla didn’t need more equipment, but she could always use more magic. She’ll buy the Ice Creation spell, then when she has the time later, try to learn it: Learn spell 95% [rolled 38]

GM: It takes Shaarilla about an hour and a quarter to learn Ice Construction and another hour and a quarter to learn Spell Store. I've added both spells to her list.

SHAARILLA: Is there anyone flying overhead, or anything to indicate that flying over the city is discouraged? At some point Shaarilla would like to stretch her wings and look around town from the air. Not looking for anything specific, just to enjoy the different view and get a general idea of the city layout. She’ll be flying fairly high, so as to not intrude on people’s privacy.

GM: There are other myrrhhn in Sagar as it is a common race of the phlogiston. She sees them flying overhead so there does not appear to be a ban on flying over the city.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will also take her turn watching the Star Sprite, though it would be a good idea for someone else to be there with her. She’ll be fine with taking night watch, so as to spend more time with her ship. The rain is annoying, but she’s not much affected by the cold.

MORTY: I am more than interested in chipping in toward lore books, or a useful magic item. The only thing on the list that I think I would personally use and no one else would would be the scroll of Phantasmal Force. The woodworking tools are necessary for ship repairs after all, though they're not overly expensive. Metalworking tools will be something I will need long term, but given we don't have a forge on the boat, I'm not sure we need to get our own set for some time, I would probably be paying some smith for the use of his forge and tools for any work we needed done.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla is willing to chip in to get Morty woodworking tools and supplies. Though I think that would qualify as a group treasury purchase.

MARTIN: Agreed.

KC (GM) For me personally, with the limited funds available for books I am rank 2 in these lores, so 2 or 3 ranks learned and 2 + 3 = 5 max minimum would be good. Than if anyone want to use them later that would be fine by me. As for the language primer; a linguist skill of 2 how much faster is 20% for learning the new language? And I have Research skill for a analyze book of 22%.

KC: (GM) what kind of storage areas odd on the Star Sprite besides the water tank. Will we need to buy trunks or other things to store items in on the sprite?

GM: There are cabinets in the hut built near the roof of the hut on either side. They are intended to hold dishes and food. Speaking of which, you can save a lot of money if you purchase food that you prepare rather than buying rations for a silver a day. You can easily get the food cost down to 2-3 cp a day per person if you purchase and prepare your own food. Of course no one in the group has cooking skill so that may not be an option unless someone wants to volunteer.

BARNAS: Healing for Martin Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 2 1 (+4)- Total: 7]

BARNAS: Healing for Martin Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 2 5 (+4)- Total: 11]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 1 6 (+4)- Total: 11]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 5 5 (+4)- Total: 14]

BARNAS: Oh and duh.. he should have used his Healing Charm to heal himself [rolled 5 3 (+4)- Total: 12]

GM: I assumed he did and he is now fully healed.

BARNAS: Lani and Morty should get the accelerated Healings, and of course Healing Sanctuary.

GM: Going into the meeting with Areegi Morton, Lani will be down 21 HP and Tyra will be down 26. Everyone else will either be fully healed or down single digits.

BARNAS: So far here is what I have on the Barnas is interested list Two books for Artifact Lore (1 of which needs to be level 4) 100 each (any one else interested?)

BARNAS: The Jirdin books 60 (up to 6 or 7 ranks language ) and 250 (Max 8, 2 0r 3) (Syl is also interested so maybe split the cost?)

BARNAS: He will still look for a good/affordable set of armor [rolled 98 vs. LUCK 20, 5x roll] and a musical instrument [rolled 100 vs. LUCK 20, 5x roll]. He will also look for a more basic book about Jirdin to help build up to the level 8 book without wasting it. [rolled 50 vs. LUCK 20, 3x roll]

GM: He finds no other books on Jirdunian Culture. For armor and musical instrument, assuming you are not looking for magical ones, you can just buy them and let me know what you spent and I will update.

BARNAS: As for the ship he is totally up for making it a living space and he can take cooking skill... Lets find a Cook book :) [rolled 5 vs. LUCK 20, MADE BY A QUARTER!!!]

GM: Barnas finds a good cook book for 25 sp. He can use it to buy the skill and buy up ranks later (no specific limit as long as you continue to use the skill).

BARNAS: Of course that is the one he makes a good roll on. :) Ok if everyone else is wanting to do this I would recommend adding Camp Dishes to the ships supplies.. and basic food.

KC: Sounds good to me. I will also start taking the cooking skill, will not hurt to have at least two with the skill.

MORTY: I would appreciate if you could get me a deal on the tools, and on the scroll I mentioned. Let me know how much my share of the lore books is. I don't see any reason to wait on the tools, but the scroll and books could wait if they have to. I am fine keeping watch on the ship while you are meeting this Mr. Morton.

MORTY (OOC): I believe the carpentry tools are base cost of 36sp.

GM: Barnas can get the price of the scroll down to 190 sp and the prices of the tools down to 34.

GM: I went ahead and marked off coins for the carpentry tools, camp dishes and 20 days worth of food (160 person days). Cost for food if you prepare it yourself is 1 sp per day for the group so the 160 person days cost a total of 20 sp.

GM: Since Barnas is willing to negotiate for everyone, I will simply start giving the group the benefit of the bartering from now on (just remind me if I forget).

MORTY (GM): Please make the appropriate Learn Spell roll to learn Spell Store, I don't want to have to jump through the hoops to make the COTE server make the roll. I will take extra time, and spend a luck point if I fail.

GM: I rolled a 74 vs a base chance of 85% (+5% for extra time). It took you about 4 hours to learn it.

SYL: She is interested in armor and some weapon purchases, but she will wait until we meet our possible new employer before buying anything. She will take up Morty on his offer when she does head out to the markets.

TYRA: Tyra and Martin chat and he expresses interest in buying her shield once she can find a kite shield. Tyra will be looking for a quality weapons and armor shops that sell a morning star and a kite shield.

GM: Go ahead and make any equipment purchases you want and let me know how much you spend. Rather than making barter rolls for everything, simply assume that, with Barnas current rank of Barter, he can get a 5% discount on the price.

TYRA: Tyra will purchase a kite shield and morning star for 494 silver. She'll sell her large round shield to Martin for 110 silver. After putting 20 silver toward the monster lore book, she'll have 13 silver left over.

KC: his wish list in order of Desires. (not necessarily bought but wanted.)

Ring of Defense - 600 s. (too expensive)
Transformation Scroll of Hold Person - 143 s. (bought)
Leather armor – 126 s. (bought)
The Language of Jirdin Primer - 237 s.
Cook Book – 23 s.

KC: He spent 269 silver on items and that leaves 140 silver towards the Language Primer.

GM: I marked off the 269.

KC: he will take time to learn Hold Person and Spell Store if he can get it away from the others for long enough.
Hold Person - 4.44 hours (Taking time to learn the spell. 13.32 hours) 75% chance to learn rolled a [rolled 2]
Spell Store – 1.56 hours (Taking time to learn the spell. 4.68 hours) 75% chance to learn rolled a [rolled 12]

GM: Both spells are now in your character sheet.

MARTIN: Works for me.

MARTIN (GM): can you move 110 silver from Martin to Tyra?

GM: Done.

MARTIN: is interested in learning the Spell Store spell, though between healing and meeting and shopping for armor he may not have time…

GM: Go ahead and send the learn roll. If you do not take extra time, then it will only take a couple of hours. With extra time, it will be about 5 hours.

SYL: will purchase Leather Armor (128 sp), a Short Bow (128 sp), 20 regular Arrows (4 sp), 10 silver arrows (10sp), a sling (19 sp) and 20 bullets (2 sp) for a total of 291 sp.

SYL (GM): I assume I cannot learn Star Life until i raise my Dark Magics SK to level 3, correct? Still need to raise Magic Language - Sorcery above 0 to learn the COP and Spell Store.

GM: She can lean Star Life any time she wants. At rank 3 in Dark Magics SK, she will automatically learn another spell as well.

GM: For the General spells you are correct. You need to be rank 4 in Magic Language - Sorcery to learn GK spells.

MORTY: Once the others have relayed to him the nature of the mission (and its guardians), Morty pipes up with, "So did anyone else look around for any books on the undead, particularly since this mission seems likely to have more of them?

MORTY TECH: Undead Lore [rolled 25 vs. LUCK 19, 2x roll], Artifact Lore [rolled 50 vs. LUCK 19, 3x roll]

MORTY (OOC): I'd like a fairly basic book on Undead Lore, and will foot the bill personally if noone else wants to chip in. Something like max rank 3-4, # of ranks 1-2 should be nice and cheap. If I also get lucky enough to find a second book similar to KC's suggestions with max rank 6 and # of ranks 2, I will hopefully get that one as well.

GM: Morty finds the following books:

Dead Bones - 55 sp
The Spirit World - 145 sp
March of Heroes - 70 sp

Flipping through the books in the store, Morty believes that Dead Bones will allow his to increase his Undead Lore by a couple of ranks but the information is somewhat basic so not above rank 4. The Spirit World would also improve Undead Lore but the information is not as basic. In game terms, he believes max rank would be higher but he is not sure how high, maybe somewhere between 6 and 9 with max ranks bought between 1 and 3. March of Heroes has several stories where magic items are listed but not a lot. In game terms, Morty thinks max rank of 4 and number of ranks of 2.

BARNAS: When he learns about Match of Heroes the young cleric express an interest. "It seems much more inclusive then what I could find. He is willing to split the cost with Morty.

MORTY (GM): Will you allow us to teach each other lore skills or must we have a book for each? I'm fairly low ranked in all my lores because I took so many of them, so some of the more specialized people might be able to teach me something before I use the books?

GM: Yes, you can teach each other but if all of your knowledge is based on the same source, it won't do any good. If someone has knowledge based on a different source, then yes, that person can train you.

MORTY (OOC): Then it seems we need to have an idea of where everyone started out in each lore, or at least the best rank anyone had at start, since that starting knowledge came from different sources, whereas the stuff bought with these books is the same. I can imagine this being a nightmare of bookkeeping for you to track who studied which book and for how much ranks as well :(

MORTY (OOC): The only purchases I was sure I'd make were the woodworking tools (party) and the scroll of Phantasmal Force. Beyond that I am willing to donate up to 200sp toward book purchases, though any cost of these undead lore books would probably cut into that. I would also have done a full day's rest on the third day with only very light activity keeping watch on the Star Sprite during the meeting, does this +1 hp healed get doubled by Accelerate Healing or does the doubling take place before the +1?

GM: I marked off the 190 sp for the scroll. Did you want to try to learn it during the 3 days or should I add it to the magic item list.

MORTY (GM): I am not certain I have the time, but I would like to have tried to learn it on day 2 before I needed the full days' rest on day 3 (once the accelerated healing had been cast). The other option is to do it on day 4, but only if I'm fully healed after day 3. Go ahead and make the roll, and I will spend a luck point on a reroll if necessary.

GM: Base time is one day so if you want to spend triple time you will not have time to learn it before this adventure. Let me know if you want to just spend base time.

GM: Yes, you can get one additional point of healing by resting the entire day, which will be doubled by Accelerated Healing for those who have the spell.

MORTY: "Barnas, did you look into other ways for us to get healed while we're here, an herbalist or alchemist might have something that isn't too cost prohibitive? I know you're doing your best but pretty much everyone got a little wounded along with the severe wounds Tyra and Martin took.

BARNAS: The young cleric had not but he is totally willing to.

BARNAS: Luck for finding Herbalist or Alchemist Healing [rolled 87 vs. LUCK 20, 5x roll]. Luck for finding Magical Healing Potions and Scrolls [rolled 80 vs. LUCK 20, 4x roll]

GM: Barnas has no luck finding useful herbs or magical healing potions or scrolls.

MARTIN: roll to learn spell store [rolled 82]
MARTIN: roll to cast Armor before the meeting. [rolled 44]

GM: Martin succeeded in the Armor spell but failed to learn Spell Store. He can try again if his INT improves or if the group finds another source of the spell.

BARNAS: Healing for Lani Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 2 6 (+4)- Total: 12]

BARNAS: Healing for Lani Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 1 6 (+4)- Total: 11]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 6 1 (+4)- Total: 11]

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 2 3 (+4)- Total: 9]

BARNAS: Using Healing Sanctuary. Accelerated Healing to those that can use it and do not have it.

GM: After two more nights of healing, including a full day of rest and Barnas' healing spells, almost everyone is fully healed and those that aren't are only down a few HP (Martin and Tyra are down 3 and Lani is down 1)

GM: I've added the following books to the start of a library aboard the Star Sprite. The library is basically a couple of the cupboards in the hut that are built into the upper part of the hut on the port and starboard sides. The camp dishes and food that you bought occupy the rest of the cupboards, making them pretty full.
  • Grinding Teeth (book) - Monster Lore - 105 sp
  • Long Lost Civilization (book) - Jirdunian Lore - 360 sp
  • The Language of the Jirdun - Language Jirdunian - 250 sp
  • Dead Bones - Undead Lore - 55 sp
  • March of Heroes - Artifact Lore - 70 sp
  • Basic Foods - Cooking skill and recipes - 25 sp

GM: I have marked off the money that KC, Tyra, Lani, Syl and Shaarilla have donated (which added up to 310 sp). The books cost a total of 865 sp. If Morty and Barnas each donate 200 sp, that adds up to 710 sp, leaving you 155 sp short. Because you are spending so much, the proprietor is willing to knock another 55 sp off the price but you will still need to come up with another 100 sp for the books.

GM: Who wants to donate towards the 100 sp.

BARNAS: Gain access to 705 sp worth of books I want for 300 sp I'll call that a win. Although I will not turn down any help :)

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will donate another 100 sp. She’s not planning on learning any of these lores currently, but thinks it’s a good idea to have them.

GM: Okay, the 6 books are all paid for. They are listed in a Player Document called Spelljammer - Star Sprite Equipment List. Whenever you buy up a lore that makes use of one of the books, let me know.
