LANI: When the sounds of battle in the other chamber have ended, and she can hear the quiet cheers of relief that the group has survived their first battle, Lani calls out, "There are a couple of crypts back here with a dozen or so sarcophagi. About half of them are empty. Just like in there, is smells of mold and rust and decay.

GM: Note that Shaarilla is at 19 HP and so will suffer a -10 to all actions unless healed. She is only down 7 HP but has low starting HP. Barnas is the most hurt as he is down 19 HP.

KC: WE should leave a watch and the rest of us can search the rooms for the key to get through the next set of doors. While this is going on we can try first aid or heling spells on those who need it most.

MORTY: "I have detected magic on the door, and the magic I saw on the skeletons and zombies seems to be fading now that they are not animated, I think it was just the animating spell. If anyone is in any doubt, I also saw magic on several of those 'gifts' from Spelljammer, as expected."

MORTY (OOC): Since Morty will not make such suggestions in character, I will put it out there OOC. Since we're safe for the moment we may want to stop to do First Aid and even perhaps a little curing magic from Barnas if needed, I need a minute or two to recharge my pistol as well. The ONLY reason I can see this being a bad idea is that we're not sure how long it will take Brute Force to find their way down here. At least if they do they won't have the spirit of Spelljammer helping them find their way, but perhaps they have other ways to track us down. If this is the decision, we should not begin searching the crypts until we're all ready, because it may trigger another force of undead rising to protect them, which would spoil any rest or first aid attempts in progress.

SHAARILLA: “That sounds like a good way to go.” Shaarilla winces in pain as she climbs down again. Even though she was only hit once before she fled the fight, the pain is enough to make it hard to concentrate. She realizes that maybe she wasn’t cut out for the adventuring life...

TYRA: Once the battle is over, Tyra pulls out her makeshift first aid kit and offers to bandage anyone's wounds. She considers herself modest in skill and stresses the importance of not bleeding further. Though she knows the group is in a hurry, she doesn't think it's wise to continue on with the wounds untreated.

TYRA OOC: Her rank is 2 with a bonus of 13%


SHAARILLA: Shaarilla will take Tyra up on her offer.

GM: I need LUCK rolls from Martin, Morty, Syl and Tyra.

SYL: Luck - 17 [rolled 19 vs. LUCK 17, 2x roll]
MORTY: Luck roll [rolled 17 vs. LUCK 19, 1x roll]
MARTIN: Luck 20 [rolled 46 vs. LUCK 20, 3x roll]
TYRA: Luck 17 [rolled 1 vs. LUCK 17, MADE BY A QUARTER!!!]

TYRA: Here are a few rolls for first aid. If someone isn't all that wounded then for time's sake it may make sense to skip bandaging them. Also, since she's not that skilled the chances of her getting success are not high.

TYRA (GM): I'll wait until we get to the actual first aid part but I'm thinking she'll reroll the blunder as that's not the best way to start off doing first aid!!

BARNAS: OOC I think first aid needs to be done before Healing spells. (If I remember correctly)

BARNAS: When Tyra offers first aid the young cleric nods and accepts. "I hope zombies are not infectious because I think that nasty thing bit me. I have only two healing spell if we think it is wise to use them now I will".



Tyra begins first aid on Shaarilla. Just as she is getting started, Martin says, in a voice that sounds like Martin's, but in a cruel tone that sounds nothing like him, "Ah, there you are." Martin draws his sword and moves over to attack Tyra. His movements are slow and methodical.

TYRA: "What?!" she exclaims looking cautiously at Martin. She quickly drops her bandages, grabs her shield and club and takes up a defensive stance. "Um, what's wrong with Martin?" she asks the others.

GM: Everyone can send an INT roll. Those with Magic Lore (or Everything Lore) can send lore rolls.

LANI: INT 14 [rolled 74 vs. INT 14, 6x roll]
BARNAS: Int 18 [rolled 70 vs. INT 18, 4x roll]
SHAARILLA: Int roll [rolled 20 vs. INT 25, 1x roll], everything lore [rolled 76 (Partial Success)]
TYRA: INT 16 [rolled 17 vs. INT 16, 2x roll]

Shaarilla immediately concludes that Martin is under the influence of some sort of control spell that can be targeted remotely by mental means. Since the group knows that Loric is a Mind Mage (SOTM), she concludes that he is not too far away. However, given the labyrinthine nature of Spelljammer, that doesn't necessarily mean that he can get here quickly. But it does mean that the group is within range of Loric's mental spells.


MORTY (GM): Does this suggest a defensive option or must we subdue Martin somehow? Even if we did, we would need a defense against him simply controlling another one of our friends... I personally (OOC) know of one option that Barnas might have available, but it would depend on his having prepared the right spell, and it would only serve to break his hold on Martin and not protect anyone else. My only other thought would be to move out of range somehow, or perhaps moving forward into the magically shielded door would shield us. Unfortunately this is triggering my recurring frustrations :(

MORTY (OOC): Apparently we are not being given time to recover, so we may as well start desperately searching for the key :( Someone may want to try infusing a spell point into the magical door in case that gets it open...


GM: While everyone in the group feels that they must get through the door to continue on their route, KC's sensitivity to the route ingrained in their minds by the Spirit of Spelljammer is stronger and he is certain that they must find a physical key to open the door. He feels equally certain that the key is somewhere in the crypt.

MORTY TECH: Magic Lore rank 1, bonus 20% [rolled 46 (Failure)]


GM: Still need actions for Barnas, KC, Morty and Syl to resolve the first couple of rounds. Additionally Martin can send his attack rolls. Barnas can send another INT roll.

BARNAS: Int 18 [rolled 78 vs. INT 18, 5x roll] I think I know what this is for. I think that this roll is to remember that his Protection From Evil Spell can stop Loric's control of Martin for a bit. (I'll spend my exp to raise my cleric spells to give us 9 rounds of protection). If not let me know and I will pick another set of actions

GM: You are close but that is not what the INT roll was for. However, since you yelled out your action, then I will give a suggestion to Shaarilla, who already made a 1x roll.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla yells out, “Martin is being controlled by Loric! He must be close, but hopefully there isn’t a direct path here.”

BARNAS: Hearing Shaarilla explanation the young cleric yells back, "I got a spell for that but I need to be able to cast it."

BARNAS: OOC: I assume this yell will draw Loric's attention and make Barnas his target. If the other run interference and allow him to cast he will... Otherwise he will go Full Defense while Loric attacks him through Martin.


GM: After a moment of thought, it occurs to Shaarilla that if Barnas casts his spell to break the hold that Loric has on Martin, Loric will simply target someone else. It might be a better idea to not cast it until the group has found a way through the door. Then, Barnas can cast the spell and the group can run as quickly as they can and hopefully get out of range of Loric's influence before he can get another spell off. In the meantime, Tyra can maintain a defensive posture against Martin's attacks and hopefully keep him from harming anyone.

KCKC: He will rush to the Crypt that is opposite the one Lani is searching. If we are in a hurry than searching more area at once should get us on our way faster. He will check out the open ones first than move on from there to the closed ones.

LaniLANI: Hearing Shaarilla's warning, Lani decides to search quickly for the key, hoping that it is somewhere in the crypts area. She starts with the room she is in.

LANI (OOC): At this point, she will search quickly. She will spend only one round in this crypt, rushing to each open sarcophagus and looking inside. If she finds nothing, she will spend next round doing the same with the other crypt to the south.
ShaarillaSHAARILLA: Shaarilla will attempt to step behind Tyra, and then cast Ice Creation to create a sheet of slippery ice underneath Martin’s feet.

SHAARILLA: Init: [rolled 5], cast chance 42 [rolled 11 vs cast chance of 42 - Successful Cast Chance!]

TyraTYRA TECH: Full defensive and move toward Martin so he can't easily attack someone else.

Martin attacks Tyra but Tyra easily blocks the attack with her shield.

With Shaarilla's shouted warning, Barnas knows that he can cast a Protection from Evil spell on Martin that should break the mental hold that Loric has on him. He lets the others know of his plan but Shaarilla shakes her head and tells him to wait.

KC runs down the east passage through which a some of the undead wandered and finds a mirror image of what Lani is seeing on the other side. He rushes from sarcophagus to sarcophagus looking inside for any sign of a key. Syl dodges around Barnas and Martin and joins KC in the search.

GM: KC is human so will need a light source. I marked off one spell point for him to create a Soft Light cantrip so he can search.

GM: Because she had to dodge around, Syl just reaches the south crypt on the east side by the end of round 1.

Lani rushes into the northern crypt on her side and looks quickly into each of the sarcophagi but sees no sign of a key. She is relying on infravision to search.

Morty rushes down the passages and does the same to the southern crypt. The sarcophagi are resting on the floor so he is able to see into them. He too is relying on infravision. In the furthest sarcophagus he sees a moldy corpse. The sarcophagus is setting in a puddle of water and the bottom of the sarcophagus is very wet and moldy. Up near the head of the corpse, Morty sees a rotted canvas bag with dozens of coins spilling out.

GM: I forgot to mention that my assumption is that Shaarilla changes her mind about casting the Ice Creation spell. Not only will it eventually be just as impairing for Tyra, but Shaarilla is in a position to coordinate things right now as far as ensuring the key is found and the door opened before Barnas casts his Protection from Evil. She made a 1x INT roll so she has a clear idea of how to proceed.

GM: Go ahead and send your round 2 actions.

KC: (GM) for clarification could you please listed how many coffin are in each room and how many are already opened. Since we are all quickly glancing into the open ones on this sweep it will be good to know how many are left. If the key is not found.

GM: All of the sarcophagi are open. Some of them are empty and some still have (currently inanimate) corpses inside.

MortyMORTY: "I think it might be best for someone with longer reach to try to retrieve this sack of coins," I say quietly, pointing at it, "the mold might be dangerous. I'll help the others look on the other side if they haven't already found it."
LaniLANI: Lani moves to the southern crypt. When she sees Morty she asks, "Do you need help searching? I didnt' find anything in the other crypt."
ShaarillaSHAARILLA: Shaarilla continues to watch and keep track of what’s happening, waiting till the time is right to have Barnas cast his spell.
SylSYL: Will burn a point for Power Perception (can't remember if someone already has in here) to see if any of the sarcophagi (or key) are glowing. She will look at her quarter first, then Morty's and around clock-wise. For now she will stay out of the fray with Martin and concentrate on trying to find a way out of this room and away from Loric.

KC and Syl continue to search the crypts on the east side of the chamber.

Lani asks Morty for some light and Morty brings up a soft light cantrip. Lani looks distastefully at the rotting corpse and the sludge at the bottom of the sarcophagus and says, "Let's hope the bag stays together long enough for me to lift it out."

She grasps the neck of the bag and, in one very smooth motion, lifts the bag out of the sarcophagus and onto the ground. The bag splits a little during the short journey and a couple of coins and a bronze key fall out of the bag and onto the floor of the chamber. Morty quickly scoops them up.

Once the bag is on the floor, Lani shakes it and lets it split apart. Coins spill out along with a very water-damaged book. Morty pulls a couple of small sacks out of his backpack and the two quickly shovel the coins into it. More carefully, Morty places the book into its own sack. Once done, the two rush back to the main chamber. Lani, carrying the sack of coins, says, "Morty found a key and some treasure!"

KC and Syl have finished searching their side and are back by now. KC takes the key and knows as soon as he touches it that it is the right key for the door. Lani stuffs the sack of coins into her backpack. Morty places the damaged book, wrapped in a sack, into his own backpack.

Tyra, who has been defending herself against Martin's attacks, suddenly grimaces as his blade slips through her guard and draws blood in a deep cut on her left torso. (She takes 8 damage after PROT).

GM: Great time for Martin to finally start rolling good!

KC takes the key and rushes to the door. He inserts the key and turns it. The door opens revealing another hallway. Shaarilla nods to Barnas and says, "Now!"

Barnas casts his Protection from Evil spell and breaks Loric's mental hold. Once this is done, the group rushes from the chamber and does not stop running until they have put a couple hundred yards between them and the crypts. Only then do they slow down to a more cautious pace.

TYRA: Once the group rushed out of the chamber, Tyra shook her head, "Ouch, Martin you got me good on that last swing." she says winces as she runs. "Glad, that part is over!"

GM: Although you probably don't want to take the five minutes needed to do first aid, let me know if Barnas is going to cast either of his CLW spells. Both Shaarilla and Tyra can use them.

BARNAS: Knowing that they can't rest just yet to do first aid the young cleric casts while on the move.

BARNAS: Healing for Shaarilla Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 1 5 (+4)- Total: 10] plus 30% for Healing specialist

BARNAS: Healing for Tyra Cure Light Wounds with Healing Charm [rolled 3 3 (+4)- Total: 10] plus 30% for Healing specialist


TYRA: Once Barnas can cast his healing spell, Tyra thanks him. "Yeah, seems like we don't have time to do traditional first aid."
