GM: I am showing the following magical preparations:

After their meal, the group heads out onto the balcony. Once everyone is crowded onto the balcony, Shaarilla puts a spell point into the gargoyle's ear. This causes everyone on the balcony to turn invisible and also makes the invisible stairs on the right side of the balcony manifest. Lani and Randle are the only ones unable to see the stairs but they are able to feel them. Everyone else is able to see them either with Witchsight, or with a Detect Invisible cast by Morty.

Shaarilla and Morty both take to the air, Shaarilla on her wings and Morty sitting on the Star Shield. The rest of the group starts up the invisible stairs, with KC in the lead, followed by Lani, Martin, Syl, Randle and Tyra.

A few seconds after taking off from the balcony, both Shaarilla and Morty become visible again. The rest of the group on the invisible stairs remains invisible. Morty and Shaarilla fly outboard of the group, flanking them from a short distance away. Both are able to see the group due to their Witchsight and Detect Invisibility.

The stairs wind up the side of the tower. The inboard side of the invisible step is against the stone of the tower. The stairs are about 8 inches up per step. Each stair is 3 feet wide and 9 inches deep - about the same as a typical staircase. They have a feel of moderately smooth stone.

Suddenly, two crossbow bolts shoot out of the wall of the tower. Both shoot out directly in front of KC. One hits Shaarilla and the other hits Morty. Shaarilla takes [rolled 7 6 (+8)- Total: 21] damage while Morty suffers a critical hit with base damage of [rolled 8 3 (+8)- Total: 19]. Let me know if Morty wants to use a Luck point. Also let me know how Shaarilla and Morty want to respond (move away, move up, move down, something else, etc.).

KC clearly saw the shots fire. They did not emanate from arrow slits or any other type of hole. They seems to come right out of the stone of the building itself. No one on the stairs was targeted. I will assume that the group on the stairs continues up the stairs unless someone does otherwise.

SHAARILLA: Shaarilla let’s out an eep as she is unexpectedly hit by an arrow. She calls out to Morty, “Plan B, go back and climb the stairs like everyone else!” Shaarilla will reverse course and start heading for the balcony.

GM: It occurs to both Morty and Shaarilla, who are both very smart, that this is probably some sort of defensive mechanism. They can imagine the tower owner triggering the gargoyle ear and rushing up the steps while nearby attackers harry him. They wonder if arrows would have also been targeted at anyone spider climbing on the walls rather than using the invisible steps and figure the answer is probably yes.



LANI: It just occurred to me that Lani cannot see either the steps or KC since both are invisible. She will activate Mental Perception so that she can at least see KC.

Assuming that Shaarilla and Morty retreat back to the balcony, no more crossbow bolts come out.

GM: If Morty does not use a Luck point then he is badly wounded.

The group continues up the stairs.

GM: I need a mental saving throw from KC, who is in the lead.

KC: mental saving throw. [rolled 16 vs save of 50 - Successful Save!] will use a luck point if I fail.

GM: KC does not feel any effect and does not know that he has been attacked.

LANI: Lani shouts out, "Someone up above, probably on the roof, just hit KC with some sort of mental attack!"

GM: The group has been cautiously climbing the steps for about 3 rounds now. If KC is moving at his normal TMR, then he has covered 225 feet of lateral distance and 25 feet of vertical distance, putting him about halfway up the side of level 5. However, if he is moving at his full TMR, then he is leaving some of the group behind. Lani is still with him but Martin is further behind, with Syl right behind Martin. Randle is even further behind with Tyra behind him.

GM: KC has a DEX of 25 and can see the invisible stairs so he can safely move at 2x TMR if he chooses. Lani has a DEX of 26 and can see KC (via mental perception) so she can also safely move at 2x TMR. Let me know if KC wants to increase speed. Another alternative of course, is to reverse direction and head back down the stairs.

GM: We are essentially in combat time right now. Let's call this the beginning of round 1. The attack on KC was a free action on round 0. Go ahead and send your actions.

GM: Not really sure if the group is more inclined to press on and take on the mentalist attacker or to retreat. Although the group can't really discuss it effectively, feel free to weigh in as players.

GM: Pressing on would basically mean KC and Lani rushing up the stairs, which may or may not lead to the roof. Lani thought that the mental attack came from the roof. Everyone else would follow either at TMR or, if you want to take risks, 2x TMR. Those with Spider Climb (or Spider Boots of Climbing) can move at 2x TMR with no risk of slipping on the invisible stairs. The Spider Climb would also allow someone (e.g. Tyra) to pass an other wise slow moving character (e.g., Randle). Anyone Spider Climbing on the wall (i.e., departing the invisible stairs) may be risking a crossbow bolt.

GM: Retreating would mean Morty and Shaarilla turning around and heading back down the invisible stairs to the balcony, with everyone else following.


GM: Here are turns received and assumptions for those who have not yet sent in turns:

5x DEX: Stumble a lot and move only 1x TMR this round
6x DEX: Stumble precariously. Make 2x DEX roll to avoid falling off the stairs.
7x DEX or worse or roll 96+: Fall off stairs

KCKC: Well .... In a bit of Indecision .... I hesitate and look at Lani .. . Than start up the stars at 2x TMR.

TyraTYRA: After hearing Lani's shout out she replies, "Okay, I'll be there as soon as I safely can." Tyra will move at 2x TMR up the ramp. She will make sure to not depart the invisible stairs in the process.


KC and Lani move another 150 feet up the stairs. Some distance below them, they see the balcony that they started off from.

About halfway through the round, Lani is targeted with a mental attack, which she is able to resist.

Martin moves another 116 feet up the stairs.

Syl pass up Martin and moves another 124 feet up the stairs.

Randle moves another 104 feet up the stairs.

Tyra passes up Randle and moves another 130 feet up the stairs.

Shaarilla moves another 65 feet up the stairs.

Morty moves another 63 feet up the stairs.


SHAARILLA: Does Shaarilla will know that the front of the line is being attacked? I’m assuming that she’s clueless, being so far back…

SHAARILLA: If she is aware of the problem, shrill is willing to try moving at 2x TMR, figuring that if she does fall off the stairway, she can just fly back to the balcony and start over.

GM: Go ahead and make a PER roll. If she makes a 3x PER roll, she is aware of what is going on up front.

SHAARILLA: perception check [rolled 5 vs. PER 15, MADE BY HALF!]

GM: She is aware. Go ahead and make a DEX roll.

SHAARILLA: Dexterity check [rolled 43 vs. DEX 22, 2x roll]

GM: I moved her another 65 feet forward. She is just ahead of Morty and right behind Randle.

MORTY (GM): I ate the Ettercap Glands with no problem so I have Spider Climb too, treat me as moving at 2x TMR. Sorry I haven't responded to this I just returned from my mom's funeral in Michigan.

GM: I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder. I moved him another 63 feet forward.

GM: I made a bit of an error with regards to steps and distance so I am going to fudge and say that KC and Lani reach an invisible landing at 375 feet. Also at that level are gargoyle heads set into the side of the tower every 10 feet, located about 5 feet above the invisible ledge. The roof of the tower is about 25 feet above the invisible ledge.

KC: so the gargoyle heads are invisible too? I do not remember a description of the with Martins wizard eye spell.

GM: No, the gargoyle heads are not invisible. They are just architectural features of the tower, not normally very noteworthy except that the invisible ledge is only a few feet below them and the key to triggering the invisible stairs was a gargoyle on the balcony.

MARTIN: Danger, Will Robinson!!!

KC: will use power perception to look over the area of the landing. First from the top step while waiting for others to arrive. Range 15ft for 5 minutes. Power perception roll of [rolled 125 (Success)]

GM: KC almost misses it but then notices that the interior of the ear of the first gargoyle is magical. It is basically a button-sized area of faint magic.

GM: Everyone can send their round 2 actions. Unless someone says otherwise, I will assume that everyone except KC and Lani are continuing up the stairs. Keep in mind that both KC and Lani have experience mental attacks over the past two rounds. This may impact your desire to stand here and wait.

There are a total of 45 feet of vertical distance between the first step on the balcony of level 4, to the magically concealed entrance to level 6, which will be visible to anyone who is invisible and climbing the stairs.

45 feet is 540 inches. Each step is 9" high and 9" deep. The first number (9" high) means that there are a total of 60 steps. The second number (9" deep) means there is a total of 540 feet of lateral distance to cover. That means the stairs completely circle the tower almost two times.
