A Scout Wand is a short, thick rod, about eight inches long and 1 inch in diameter, and made of marble. One end is flat while the other is rounded, and the shaft itself is cut into a diamond pattern of narrow grooves (for easier grip). On the flat end is a quarter-inch slit that runs most of the way across the end. Raised studs, also of marble and cut in multiple patterns, are set into the shaft of the rod, one inch from the rounded end. (It basically looks roughly like a marble handle of a dagger or chisel with the actual dagger or chisel missing.)

There are a total of 7 scout wands. The coloration of each Scout Wand varies widely.
  • Desert Wand - This wand has a brown and blue, marbleized coloration.
  • Forest Wand - This wand has a green and brown, marbleized coloration.
  • Mountain Wand - This wand has a gray and white, marbleized coloration.
  • Night Wand - This wand is made of black marble.
  • Ocean Wand - This wand has a blue and white, marbleized coloration.
  • Underworld Wand - This wand has a green and purple, marbleized coloration.
  • Volcano Wand - This wand has a red and black, marbleized coloration.

Scout Wands have multiple properties most linked to the 7 gems . All require attunement to function.
  • Listen - If the wand is in the possession of someone who is attuned to it, then it will pick up conversations from other Scout Wands within 20 miles (q.v.). There is no limit to the use of this ability.
  • Speak (star) - For up to 10 minutes per hour, an attuned user can hold down the gem shaped like a star, speak into the rounded end of the wand, and his voice will be heard by all other Scout Wands within 20 miles. The speaker's voice is not loud and can't be heard very distinctly beyond a range of a few feet.
  • Direction (arrow) - By pushing the arrow button while someone is speaking into a distant wand, the attuned user causes a small, glowing arrow to appear in the air directly above the rounded end of the wand, pointing towards the distant wand.
  • Dagger (knife) - By pushing the knife button, a sharp blade snicks out through the slit at the other end. The weapon functions as a +1 Dagger. Pushing the button a second time will retract the blade. The button will not function if another tool is extended.
  • Spike (spike) - By pushing the spike button, a sharp 8" long spike snicks out through the slit at the other end. Pushing the button a second time will retract the spike. The button will not function if another tool is extended.
  • File (file) - By pushing the file button, a 6" long file snicks out through the slit at the other end. Pushing the button a second time will retract the tool. The button will not function if another tool is extended. This tool is ideal for sharpening weapons.
  • Saw (saw) - By pushing the saw button, a 12" long, rigid metal saw snicks out through the slit at the other end. Pushing the button a second time will retract the tool. The button will not function if another tool is extended. This tool can cut wood and even some metals.
  • Chisel (chisel) - By pushing the saw button, a 12" long, rigid metal saw snicks out through the slit at the other end. Pushing the button a second time will retract the tool. The button will not function if another tool is extended.




GM: With some experimentation you find that the answer to that question is yes - to a degree. Arek, who is currently attuned to the black and red Scout Wand, touches the knife gem, causing the knife to extend. He hands the wand to Isell who spends about 10 minutes examining the knife before it suddenly retracts. You do some more testing and find this behavior consistent. The tool retracts after about 10 minutes if it is not in the hands of the attuned user.


GM: The group has plenty of time to experiment with the wands. You learn that once you have attuned to the wand, you can easily reattune to it. Attunement takes 6 hours.

GM Notes (not visible on web):Attunement is easier for those versed in some of the various scouting-type skills. For each rank of Hide in Shadows, Move Silently, Tracking and Scouting, a 2% bonus is gained to the attunement roll. For example, Navar is rank 5 with Hide in Shadows and rank 5 with Move Silently so he gains a bonus of 20% ((5 + 5) x 2) to his attunement roll.
