The talent complements rogues, scouts, martial artists, and mechanician without being limited to them.
Time Sense
"Some people count the passing of time. Others simply know it."
The character possesses an extraordinary awareness of the passage of time. Even while sleeping, unconscious, or deprived of external cues, they instinctively perceive the passage of seconds, minutes, hours, and days.
This awareness gradually develops into an uncanny ability to recognize the precise moment when events should occur, allowing them to act with remarkable timing.
Time Sense roll = (rank x 5) + ((PER - 15) * 3)
Rank 1 – Internal Clock
The character always knows approximately how much time has passed since they were last conscious.
They may make a Time Sense roll whenever they wish to determine:
- Current time of day
- Current date
- Length of time since a previous event
- Duration of a spell, poison, ritual, journey, or other ongoing effect
Results
- Success: Exact answer.
- Near Success: Correct within roughly 5%.
- Partial Success: Correct within 15–25%.
- Failure: No useful estimate.
This functions even while asleep, unconscious, blindfolded, or underground.
Rank 5 – Perfect Timing
Requirement: PER 17+
The character instinctively recognizes the ideal instant to perform a precise action.
Once per encounter, before making any roll involving timing rather than raw skill, the player may choose one of the following:
- Gain +10 to the roll.
- Improve the result by one success category (Failure → Partial → Near → Success).
Examples include:
- Picking a lock
- Disarming a trap
- Catching a falling object
- Interrupting an action
- Timing a leap
- Slipping through a closing doorway
- Releasing an arrow at exactly the right instant
The GM has final say on whether timing is a significant factor.
Rank 8 – Rhythm of Events
Requirement: DEX 18+
The character unconsciously perceives recurring patterns in the timing of the world.
After observing a repetitive action for one full cycle, they automatically determine:
- The exact interval between repetitions.
- Whether the rhythm has changed.
- The safest or most advantageous moment to act.
Examples:
- Rotating blades
- Patrol routes
- Magical pulses
- Pendulums
- Guard routines
- Clockwork mechanisms
- Predictable monster attacks
When acting according to this rhythm, gain +15 on the relevant roll.
Rank 10 – Borrowed Instant
Requirements: DEX 19+, MA 16+
The character's perception of time becomes so refined that they can briefly react before others recognize what is happening.
Once per encounter, immediately after initiative is rolled (or immediately before resolving a triggered effect), the character may choose one of the following:
- Move themselves up to 3 initiative points earlier, to a maximum of Initiative 1.
- Delay themselves by any amount without losing the action.
- Take a single defensive action (dodge, dive, catch, brace, etc.) before the triggering event resolves.
This ability represents exceptional anticipation rather than supernatural speed.
Rank 12 – Moment of Certainty
Requirements: PER 19+, WP 17+
The character occasionally experiences absolute certainty that a specific instant is "the right moment."
Once per game day, immediately before making a single roll involving timing, precision, or reaction, the character may declare a Moment of Certainty.
That roll is treated as one success category higher.
Additionally, the character automatically senses:
- When a countdown is about to expire.
- When a spell duration is within one round of ending.
- The exact instant an ambush is about to spring if they had reason to suspect danger.
The talent never reveals what will happen—only when.
Rank 15 – The Flow of Time
Requirements: PER 22+, MA 18+, WP 19+
The character's awareness approaches the supernatural.
Time seems to slow within their perception, allowing them to witness countless tiny details invisible to others.
Once per encounter, the character may enter Perfect Timing for one combat round.
During that round:
- They may not be surprised.
- They automatically know the initiative order.
- They may change one declared action after seeing another character begin theirs.
- All timing-based rolls are treated as one success category higher.
- Precision actions gain +20.
Outside combat, this allows feats such as:
- Catching an object dropped unexpectedly.
- Threading a missile through a tiny opening.
- Walking through an elaborate trap mechanism without triggering it.
- Striking a moving target at the exact instant a vulnerability appears.
- Synchronizing perfectly with complex machinery or magical devices.
Observers often remark that the character appears to move at exactly the right moment, never hurried and never late.
Design Notes
The progression evolves as rank improves:
- Rank 1: Always knows time.
- Rank 5: Exceptional timing.
- Rank 8: Reads repeating patterns.
- Rank 10: Anticipates events before others react.
- Rank 12: Knows when important moments are about to occur.
- Rank 15: Experiences time with such clarity that it borders on precognition without actually seeing the future.
That keeps the talent focused on timing rather than chronomancy. It never grants true control over time, but someone with Rank 15 will feel almost supernatural because they are perpetually acting at the single best possible instant. |
