The target takes 1d4+2 damage per rank of non-lethal damage. This spell is ineffective against targets with no minds or targets who do not (or cannot) sleep. The bolt is also incapable of taking a target below 0 hit points. For example, if Roric the thief, with 14 hit points left, is hit with a mental bolt that causes 62 points of damage, it only causes 14 points to him and he drops unconscious.
Recovery from a Mental Bolt is faster than normal rules for recovering non-lethal damage. The character gets back the damage caused by this spell at a rate determined by comparing the victim's CON to the table below:
- CON 14 or less - None
- CON 15-17 - 1 point per round
- CON 18-19 - 2 points per round
- CON 20-21 - 3 points per round
- CON 22-23 - 4 points per round
- CON 24-25 - 5 points per round
- CON 26 and higher - (CON-20) points per round (6 at CON 26, 7 at CON 27, etc.)
