A remove curse ritual is a special knowledge ritual that can save someone from the consequences of a major or minor curse. Every curse is rated by the level of the caster. if the curse is natural (such as Lycanthropy) it is assumed to have a level of 20. It should be noted this ritual is one of the few spells or rituals where it is possible to raise the rank of the ritual higher than rank 22. The Remove Curse ritual has no maximum rank.
This ritual works equally well on both magical and clerical curses.
A mage with this ritual can use their Power Perception ability to possibly detect and determine the nature of a curse. Skill bonus with Detect Curse is ((PER - 15) x 3) + (Rank x 5). Compare the result rolled to the following table:
- Absolute Success - Determines that a curse is present, as well as both the level and exact nature of the curse (but only if this is the first roll to Detect Curse).
- Success - Determines that a curse is present, as well as both the level and general nature of the curse.
- Near Success - Determines that a curse is present and the level of the curse. Can assense again after one day to try for better result, to a max of Success.
- Partial Success - Determines that a curse is present. Can assense again after one day to try for better result, to a max of Success.
- Failure - Learns nothing. Can assense again after one day to try for better result, to a max of Near Success.
- Absolute Failure - Learns nothing. Can assense again after one day to try for better result, to a max of Partial Success.
- Blunder - Learns nothing. Can assense again after rank with Remove Curse improves.
Removing a Curse
Minor Curse: The mage must inscribe a triangle or symbol of power about the cursed being and perform the ritual for six consecutive hours. The mages chance of success is equal to 15% + [5 x level]- (level of curse). It takes two sets of ritual components (@ 100 sp per set) for the ritual.
Major curse: The mage must inscribe a triangle or other symbol of power about the cursed being, and perform this ritual for 18 consecutive hours. The mages chance of removing the curse is based on their MA, as indicated in the table below. Note that if a Ritual of Purification is performed prior to the Ritual of Remove Curse, and it has the necessary duration, it can increase the mage's MA above normal the normal max of 25. Note also that a Ritual of Preparation can be (and usually is) cast just prior to the Ritual of Remove Curse to increase the chance of success by up to 30% (3% per hour, to a maximum of 10 hours). It takes four sets of ritual components (@ 100 sp per set) for the ritual.
MA | Chance of Success |
1 to 24 | (MA - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
25 | (26 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
26 | (28 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
27 | (30 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
28 | (32 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
29 | (35 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
30+ | (38 - Level of Curse) + (Rank x 2) |
The use of precious metals on the creating of the symbol will increase the chance of success by the following amounts.
Metal | Amount | Coins | Bonus | Cost |
Silver | 5 lbs | 400 | +6 | 400 sp |
Gold | 2 lbs | 160 | +12 | 1600 sp |
Platinum | 8 oz | 40 | +18 | 4000 sp |
Mithril | 1.6 oz | 8 | +24 | 8000 sp |
Failure to Remove a Curse: If a mage tries but fails to remove a curse, the curse level increases by one and the mage cannot try again until his rank improves.
Note that the mage cannot use this spell (Detect or Remove Curse) on himself. If he is under the effect of a curse, he must find someone else to remove it. |
