For the duration of the spell, all damage from magical elemental effects (heat, fire, lightning, cold, ice, gas, acid, etc.) is reduced by the caster's rank with this spell. Thus, if cast by a rank 10 mage, then elemental damage is reduced by 10 points.

Note that the damage is reduced prior to rolling a saving throw if a saving throw is allowed.

For example, a mage casts this spell on a target at rank 10. The target subsequently gets hit with a 42 point fireball. This spell reduces the damage from 42 to 32. Then the target gets his normal save to reduce the damage by half. If he makes the save, the takes 16 damage. If he fails the save, he takes 32 damage.

The elemental protection afforded by this spell applies only to elemental effects that are created by magic. If the target falls into a lava, or is pelted with large, natural hail, the spell provides no protection. Similarly, it applies only to elemental effects that are immediate or short term, such as fireballs, lightning bolts and cones of cold. It does not protect against ongoing heat or cold such as might be experienced in a hot desert or a frigid mountain.
