The target gains a protection (PROT) of 4 for the duration of the spell, or until he has been hit by a weapon 1d4 times (+1 additional time per rank). The protection afforded by this spell is not cumulative with armor (use the better of the two) or Bracers of Protection, but is cumulative with Rings of Protection and Cloaks of Protection.

Protection increases to 5 at rank 10 and 6 at rank 15 and 7 at rank 22.

The mage may choose to reduce the protection by 1 and have the spell last for the 1 hour per rank instead of a specified number of hits.

Note that the effects of this spell are normally invisible to those unable to see magic. Those with Power Perception active see the target clothed in a mystical set of fine chainmail. Someone attacking the protected character will also likely note that they have some sort of protection.
