The target of this spell suffers one of two fates; either they suffer 1d4 damage per rank or they suffer a minor curse that results in a penalty of 5 (+1 per rank) to magic saves vs. a specific college of magic until the curse is removed. The college of magic is determined by the caster.
The determination as to which fate the target suffers is determined by the target themselves. In game terms, the player determines whether they want to suffer the damage or the curse. They will be unaware of the strength of the spell when they make their choice. Thus, they won't know whether it is 1d4 of damage, 22d4 of damage, or somewhere in between.
If they choose the damage, the duration is immediate. If they choose the curse, the duration is permanent until the curse is removed. The curse is a minor curse with a level equal to the caster's rank with this spell.
